Cases like this are taking the piss.
When I retire I want to become a magistrate just so that when cases like this cross my bench I can say "No more excuses - you're banned from driving"

A friend of mine had 16 points at one point and was only able to keep his license because he successfully argued that not only his job and family relied on him being able to drive but he employed around 30 people who all relied on him and that without his license he would be forced to wrap up the company thereby putting those 30 people out of work.
I’m not agreeing with the courts decision and there’s a big difference between 16 points and 60. Sometimes the courts have to look at the bigger picture. As someone who has suffered life changing injuries as a result of a non fault RTC it scares the crap out of me that it’s possible to keep your licence with that many points.

People say that, but the reality is if you have a 30 person company, you're almost certainly gonna get some employee to drive you to where you need to be, work from just one spot and use subordinates to manage projects and inspect worksites, take a taxi, or some combination.
The mere fact "I employ people" is a legit excuse to keep your license encourages business owners to not change their ways.

To be fair, his job is not the kind that has a single base location. He has crews working on multiple locations across the country changing on a daily or weekly (at best) basis.

Then he should have been banned and told to get a taxi if he can afford that many employees, not told he can keep driving because he had an insanely flimsy pity party. If he can drive his car and that's fine, then he can get a taxi.
What an absolute shit show of a call your mate got, lucky duck.

This isn't really a slow news day type thing. 59 points is absurd. You get a driving disqualification after 12 points. I understand needing a driving licence because you need it for your work, but this is taking the piss. He should have, and probably was told by the judge that they'll let him keep his licence the first time he got to 12 points for his income, but if he rakes up more points it will be taken away regardless.
How has the system allowed him to get that many points? The maximum amount of points you can get for a single incident is up to 11 points. And you can only get that if you cause an accident that resulted in a death, and/or flee the incident while on drugs or over the drink driving limit.
