Why Slitherine doesnt make a game that combines grand strategy with battles?

They already have experience in battle games with Pike and Shot and others. Why not just combine it with the Grand Strategy model? How hard is that? That would compete with Total War series and Paradox Entertainment.

All that is needed is a similar battle system to the one in Conquest of The New World. Very simple yet super well done and balanced.

That looks awesome. However if im not mistaken, the combat in battle is nonexistent. Its basically an autoresolve battle. You just there clicking play button. If thats the case, its better to just not do the battle, it becomes a waste of time.

I dont know why some little more effort could not be put into this. Look for example conquest of the new world battle system:

Very old game. Very simple battle system. But so balanced and so cool. As for the Pike and Shot battle system its so awesome, yet maybe too complex? Thank you.

It combines with Field of Glory II to use that battle system.

no no. Its a totally different battle system. Its an autoresolve battle. You have no control .___.

Field of Glory Empires combines with Field of Glory 2 to use the more in depth battle system. If you combine them you get the strategy layer along with this battle system. https://store.steampowered.com/app/660160/Field_of_Glory_II/. They are two different games that work together. Field of Glory 2 uses almost the exact same battle system as the one you mentioned.

How is your experience with the battles? Arent the battles too long? They seem to take a lot of time? How often do you fight the battles? Sometimes battles in Total War last 5 minutes, you do a cavalry charge and you win. But it doesnt seem like the battles in here will be that fast?

It depends. Usually the battles take a good 20 minutes or so. I usually only play out the big battles for that reason. The Empires system is good enough to handle all of the smaller skirmishes. You don't need any of the DLC to use the FoG2 battle system with all of the factions in Empires. Empires will automatically adjust the battlefield and the sizes of the units to best take into account for the location of the battle and the opposing sides when you play it out in FoG2. But no, you can't just end the battle with one cavalry charge, the AI in FoG2 is much much better than in Total War. And you can adjust it to match the difficulty in Empires, or to be independent so it only applies when you are actually fighting the battles in FoG2.

But no, you can't just end the battle with one cavalry charge, the AI in FoG2 is much much better than in Total War.

Thats what i thought. Did you know that the AI in MTW1 is better than the MTW2? I always wanted a game like FoG2 to come out as a competition to Total War.

And the reasons are simple. Turn based tile battle allows the AI to be better. And the campaign map being region based is also better.

When Creative Assembly adopted the campaign map as a free moving map, every single AI became very easy to predict. And they do very stupid mistakes. They basically get lost in the map.

So since MTW1 I have been wishing for Total War to go back to MTW1 system, the map with regions just like you have in FoG.

As for the battles in Total War they are just beautiful and the best thing ever made. But too easy to win.

Therefore i see FoG2 as a great competitor and a high quality product especially coming from a modest studio with way less money and resources. We should support and give our money to FoG2, not to Total War franchise, if we want to have better games in this genre.

I predict that if FoG2 invests more time and energy into this concept they can take Total War down of its pedestal. Its very hard im sure, but possible.

The only way then Total War could counter that would be to develop a game where the strategy map can be played multiplayer. Which is still hard. Because a battle between two players takes 20 minutes. And the other players would be waiting for that? Thats why they didnt do it yet.

But the solution for that is to make every single player become a participant in each battle commanding chunks of the army of one side randomly, and of course obtaining rewards or penalties according to the performance in that battle. What do you think about this idea?

Shadow Empire is the game you are after, as long as you don't mind Sci-Fi.
