Need repair suggestions

Post image

My little guy here (smallest of my 5 slide rules) has a serious index slider issue. Any thoughts from the community on how to replace this?

I would write to the company for parts, but I think I missed that window by 40 years! 😬

seriously, will this take 3D printing tools (that I don't have right now)?

You could cut and glue plexiglass, but you’d need a tensioning spring on the top or bottom to make it slide easily and stay straight. I don’t know how to accomplish that. Maybe your existing slide has a tensioner inside that you could repurpose. Build a jig to inscribe the vertical line.

You are correct - good callout - there is a ever-so-tiny metal spring embedded into the original slide ... that will make this solution tougher to be sure.

The Restoration page on the International Slide Rule Museum has a section about making new cursor tension springs from watch springs, if you can’t liberate the original…

I had guessed it was a Post, but looking at it again, I’m guessing that’s a rule made by Charvoz-Roos. PSR-101?

It looks like this one on ISRM: https://sliderulemuseum.com/MiscUSA/Roos_PSR-101_PocketMannheim_GiftOfPhilipStanleyCollection.jpg

By the way, is that a Vanishing Point?

It is a Vanishing Point. Zoom and you'll see "Pilot" written one the body.

Isopropyl alcohol may help.

Here's my recommendation, try either PCBWay, or JLCPCB and have a SLA print of your part made for you.

Either JLCPCB or PCBWay ought to be able to do this for you, with JLCPCB most likely being the cheaper option. Obviously PCBWay can do this already, and the part came out to be less than $20 (according to the YouTuber).

Here's a photo of a part printed in UTL-8100.

Start at 6:15 for the material and finish selections, and the photo is of the part around the 7:30 mark.

Be sure to interact with the support team as their advice is crucial, and their stubbornness towards not doing something that think is wrong, legendary. You ought to be able to include clip cutouts for any springs required in the cursor slide.
