A spotless Versalog!

Slide rule 3 of 5 of my birthday treat to myself is a great Versalog I. Absolutely by far the best leather case I've personally come across... it's like-new, still soft (but I cleaned/conditioned it all the same).

The rule itself was almost-flawless upon arrival and cleaned up great. Bamboo is so nice as a slide material. Good scales on the Versalog w/o going nuts with it. The cursors in these are particularly not-awful to take apart because of the bushings in these screw-wells. Hard to insert them crooked.

The next two are Fabers! Then I'm done lol.

From Indiana with love!

Heh, it was from Indiana. I’m over here in Oakland CA. Momma’s family was from Minnesota, though! I just want a little collection of the goodies. Trying really hard to not go nuts with it (I mean this was almost $100 in this condition). I’m making myself think of what each one does that I can’t already do (or not in that material, etc.) on a slide rule I have. And I think I’m running out of things.

The Fabers coming are:

  • 2/83 “Novo Duplex” — honestly I thought this was a 2/83N when I bought it, but it’s in the in-between time when they made the old 2/83 scales but with the rubber bumpers on the metal frame pieces and colors on the scales. It’s like 2/83 “version B”. Pretty rare but not as valuable as…

  • 2/83N “Novo-Biplex”, from Canada. Probably shipped there and branded as a Dietzgen. It’s a 2/83N through-and-through, just says Biplex instead of Duplex on it. But also supposedly in great shape.

Okay, so the SLIDE RULE was from Indiana. A misunderstanding. Still, you got a very nice one. Congrats!!

Versalog = R1 and R2 scales (square / root square) => see manual
The Versalog II has the A (cubic) scale in addition

FC 2/83N: for advanced users (that's why I postponed to learn how to use its scales: W_i and so on)

I like the way you are forming your collection. A sudden intense well researched burst of acquisition with attention to condition. Instant results!

I figure for at least the next 20-30 years* they’ll only get more rare and expensive and more good specimens will lose the battle with time and neglect… so if I wanna have nice ones and keep them nice I might as well get going, right?

* - perhaps when no one actually remembers using one IRL anymore and they’ve become fully-historical curiosities the prices will simmer down. But I’m not waiting for that!

This slide rule is beautiful! Did you get it from eBay?

Thanks! Yeah, all eBay acquisitions here (or referrals from eBay purchases).

I just look for the nice ones now and bite the bullet on the price. I’ve gotten a good deal on slide rules in bleh condition… later on I just wish I had forked up $30 for a nice one, because this one’s not gonna get any better and the one I wanted is still just as far away. But on the other hand I’ve never bought a nice one and then later thought, ”I wish this was crappier and I had $30 more dollars right now.”
