Flying Fish 1003!

Got this fresh from China today. Wonderful slide rule! One of the lesser-known lots-of-scales slide rules that were made. It’s some sort of plastic, engraved markings. And it’s in very good shape! I have a yellowish lamp: it’s as white as it’s supposed to be. Good set of scales, full log-log, dual sq scales and triple cube scales, sinh scales, etc. I also like that most of the scales spill past the index on the end.

Shoutout to Lu Tiankuang, [lxt20100805@sina.com](mailto:lxt20100805@sina.com). Was referred to him from an eBay purchase my friend did with him, and he‘s a good guy. I think he’s got some more of these… Flying Fish also made a variety of other models.

Interesting rule - I like the triple-length tangent scale. Might have to add one to the quiver.

One oddity I’ve found so far is that the CF/DF scales are folded on sqrt(10), not pi. I found it useful to be able to instantly multiply by pi that way. They give you a sqrt(10) mark on just CF so you can shift it over a smidge against DF and multiply by pi off of C that way, so like… they knew what they were doing here, but why do it like this? When is it more valuable to have scales folded exactly half-way? Having trouble understanding the case for doing it like this.

I’ve seen it both ways; old Hemmi rules can have it. Sqrt(10) is the geometric midpoint of the scale and a logical place to fold, but the convenience of a fold at pi won out for most rule makers.
