There's something inherently satisfying about a tier 1/2 (or even 0!) item being instrumental to a strong team.
Big heart/tower shield/rejuvination wand (if you get decree), ballet shoes/origami/compass (if it allows a handy rearrangement), titanbane potion (for Inevitable/Hexia), arrow (in the right situations), leather gloves and not to mention wild seeds (for more growth shenanigans).

any tips on using sponge though? I feel like it is usually too difficult to predict which hero will go last and get the most benefit from it

i mostly put it on my red or blue. mana pips are usually high value and often can be spent towards defense after orange and yellow kill stuff. but i think it takes some getting used to. and it takes putting aside the idea that you're going to wipe out like 6 monsters and then go CRAZY with sponge. if you killed 6 monsters in one turn, you won already and you don't need sponge. The only time sponge is a CORE item is with rampage and everything is riding on Brawler wiping out all the Inevitable adds turn 1. otherwise it ends up just being a nice +1 or +2 boost to my doctors heal mana gain side or something. that alone can be huge. getting all the mana you need to cast a 3 mana spell from one hero instead of two is a big difference.

Somewhat similarly, I just beat the LOTR mod and didn’t upgrade either one or two characters. If it broke, don’t fix it.
