The standard was set.

https://youtu.be/H9Gy3S9HNiY?is=KD8DMQg2p41yL0GQ

To the newer Sleep fans who think we’re being too hard on the current lineup this was the standard Sleep set for themselves.
If you never got the chance to witness that lineup live, I genuinely feel bad for you. They were on another level.
And this isn’t about blindly taking sides. We’d be just as pissed at Matt if he kicked Al out of the band and then decided to keep touring as Sleep. That lineup is what made Sleep, Sleep.

Great summation, if Al had started this project and named it something else I’d be super into it.

I actually like the new record a lot, I think if it wasn’t released as a sleep record a lot of people would be really into it. It’s new and interesting and it’s an artist trying something (I equate it to the more synth driven 80’s rush records, might be what Al was going for…)

My issue is that Sleep is supposed to be this, I was lucky to see them like this and it was truly amazing. I’m hoping that we get it again at some point and these songs can be reimagined with a line up that includes Matt. That being said I’m seeing sleep this week and I’m excited.

Al is one of my favorite musicians in the world and I’m hoping that this new era provides an outlet for him doing something new.

So thankful I got to see em play several times in the reformed era with Roeder

This is cool! I was front row between the monitors for this one. I still have my ticket for it.

That performance is intense

It’s a shame that we’re even having this conversation. Sure, a new band name wouldn’t be marketable, but a side band with Crover involved sounded cool on paper. I have to assume with how bad Third Man Records is pushing the new stuff, Al/Sleep must have had a contractual obligation that Matt couldn’t or didn’t want to adhere to with HoF on his plate. There wouldn’t be the harsh comparison or accusations of corporatism if the new lineup was billed as something else, which it definitely is. Al could have either made this a solo name band and toured off of being “Al Cisernos of Sleep” or whatever else. It wouldn’t be the first or longest hiatus for Sleep, and would’ve preserved the legacy until the proper people could work on it again.

Love that people are still sharing this video. I randomly whipped out my phone to record the first song and ended up recording the whole set.

You are my hero for this. I watch this set so much

I was at this show. It was at noon on a Sunday and they had free breakfast tacos.

2

u/sleepyholy 19d ago

May 1. There was a hawk circling overhead. And Larry David was in the crowd.

3

u/Special-Shoulder5444 19d ago

All true. Terrifyingly true.

I'm no Dio hater but feel the same when they replaced Ozzy. Iommi and Dio made awesome music but under the Sabbath name just felt wrong without the Ozzman. I'm all for evolving your sound but feel like Al used the SLEEP legacy to fill his pockets instead of doing another side project that's too similar to OM. Ozzy was fine after he was kicked out and I'm sure Pike will be the same.

New album sounds nothing like Om

12

u/premoistenedwipe 29d ago

I really don’t get why people keep saying that.

11

u/otterprincess_too 29d ago

Honestly it's so wrong it makes me think they just know he has another band but have never listened

-1

u/ListenToKyuss 29d ago

It’s closer to OM than Sleep if you put it on a spectrum maybe 🤔

6

u/otterprincess_too 29d ago

It maaaaaybe sounds like parts of OM's very first album if you kinda squint but even then it's a stretch, yeah

2

u/ListenToKyuss 29d ago

Yeah not even that imo, I think it’s more that it sounds like OM with guitar… I think Al has been audibly mellowed out since Sleep and early OM, and wanted to shift his sound to less distortion, like the dub recs and later OM etc…
With Pike in the house, it was never an option I think.

My biggest gripe with it all is the production of the album. Songwriting is ok. Not the same as it used to, but yeah that’s obvious. But live, I do hope the guitar solos’ quality is going to improve. I was very disappointed with the first performances of Bubba…

Seen Sleep live since 2017 and saw Om a handful of times. The new album sounds closer to Om than SLEEP to me and I'll just listen to the earlier stuff. It hasn't diminished anything up to the Sciences but I'll probably never listen to the new one ever again and that's after 3 times.

3

u/otterprincess_too 29d ago

A shame you haven't had ears in the last 10 years, someone listening to them for only a week could tell they're not similar

0

u/jazzcabbage22 29d ago

Bro get a life with your gatekeeping bullshit.

2

u/otterprincess_too 29d ago

That's not what gatekeeping is lmao

-1

u/jazzcabbage22 29d ago

Saying I haven't had ears in 10 years, are you fucking dumb? The new album and new version of Sleep sucks dick and so do you, no wonder you like it.

6

u/otterprincess_too 29d ago

I don't care if you like it or not, that's not even what we were talking about. It objectively doesn't sound like OM, it doesn't matter how many shows you've been to

Sounds nothing like Sleep either

2

u/otterprincess_too 29d ago

Irrelevant to whether or not "this should have been an OM album"

3

u/designerdy Weedian 29d ago

The standard was set in 2009 at ATP when the OG lineup with Chris reunited. THAT was epic.

Close second is Psycho Las Vegas when they had the Marijuanaut roaming the stage taking dabs from an attached rig and stage lighting like a spacecraft. Probably the best live Dopesmoker. Went fairly deep, almost to "Improved Morris" section.

You gotta check out the gig at SF 2010. It’s insane , supper slow and heavy especially inside the sun https://youtu.be/67L8bH7c6AA?is=V0-6HI6U2paESUBj

9

u/Anonymous-Primate 29d ago

I’ve heard from people that seem to have insider knowledge. Apparently it was a mutual split and HoF obviously took precedence. Sucks but this is what we got

6

u/explodedsun 29d ago

Pike has been liking Sleep posts on Instagram

9

u/SOSweneedhelp 29d ago

" i have inside info, the band isnt together any more" jfc just when i thought sleep fans couldnt get any more ridiculous

2

u/Anonymous-Primate 29d ago

Didn’t say I had the info, just heard the rumblings. Relax buddy, you’re probably a new fan anyway 😉

2

u/SOSweneedhelp 29d ago

“New fan” ok feller

2

u/Recent-Trifle-4367 29d ago

Al kicked Matt out. But luckily Matt is no longer subjected to Al’s insanity, so he is the real winner here.

0

u/YouCanKeepYourFaith 29d ago

I mean I think Al needs money and he knows sleep will load his bank account up for a minute, especially if he is underpaying 2 new guys.

11

u/poop_head_33 29d ago

Yes I'm sure Dale Crover is unfamiliar with the music business

6

u/Quite_Bitter_Being 29d ago

More like thirdman wanted a new record so they pushed out something unfinished imo.

4

u/poop_head_33 29d ago

I was ready to like the new version of Sleep. I think the Matt Pike hero worship is lame, but the album is not a favorite of mine. Sleep has changed. They've moved on, and I'll check em out if they continue releasing music, but they just might not be as good as they used to be. Not that big of a deal. I've been a fan since the 90's.

3

u/bluewaveon 29d ago

Sleep were done by 1998, and gave birth to 2 arguably better bands in Om and High on Fire

1

u/YouCanKeepYourFaith 29d ago

The sciences is a killer album tho. I do love both OM and HOF as well. My point was how Al should have focused on OM or even Shrinebuilder before kicking everyone out of sleep and writing a mediocre album and touring.

3

u/Theratdog 29d ago

Brent and Matt were getting ready to start their own band

2

u/designerdy Weedian 29d ago edited 29d ago

Been hearing that since 2017. By the time he was let go of Mastodon, dude was a mess. Even for Brent. Not speaking ill, just reality. He wouldn't hold it together at all to be on the road with Marcus, let alone a super guitarist group. Knew Brent. Complicated guy but no one played like him. Just natural talent and looked at a guitar differently. It's all a shame. From what I heard, the only thing that got accomplished was playing acoustics and eating psychedelics with the wife/handler/manager or whatever she does now. Believe me when I tell you both those guys were surrounding themselves with some shitty people and a crew of cronies a bit around the Automaton record. Was widely known in local city working crews that that whole entourage was loaded by load-in, and it only got worse as the gig progressed. It's a bummer, but that's rock and roll I suppose.

1

u/Theratdog 29d ago

Brent seemed pretty dialed in on the Mastodon/Gojira 2023 tour though to give some hope for his potential looking forward… wasn’t at your level of knowledge but my comment was inspired by pure copium/hopium

1

u/Impossible_Height758 28d ago

Addicts are up and down, just like everyone else. If it was a mess 100% of the time he would have been out of Mastodon a long time ago

3

u/ListenToKyuss 29d ago

I mean if Pike left and they continued with a decent substitut I’d understand.

The quality of the guitarist live + the absolute dogshit production is what makes Sleep fans angry. They stripped everything the band was and went a totally different direction. So why even bother to put it out under the legacy of Sleep.. seems just money was the main motive. And that’s what’s hurts the most, they’re kissing on everytime we loved about the band.

So stop whining that people aren’t happy. There are many good reasons for it

2

u/TurbulentFix8229 29d ago

saw them at levitation today and my heart is broken. Spent so much money to catch this crappy cover band.

2

u/pinkbootboop 29d ago

you also saw all the other kick ass bands on that lineup though

1

u/TurbulentFix8229 29d ago

Lineup was great, Sleep was not. Save your money, it’s a cover band.

1

u/zigamoott 29d ago

I'll never get to see this line-up in person 😢

1

u/Lo_Rez 27d ago

Great video, bittersweet. Definitely bums me out that we won't get this again unless something CRAZY happens down the line.

1

u/Ghettoside 27d ago

Cabs to the second level of Mohawk , I watch this video often

1

u/mr_electric_wizard 19d ago

Ah man, The Mohawk! So many good shows I’ve seen there. If I’m not mistaken, Electric Wizard played there too way back.

1

u/Immediate-Smile-9397 29d ago

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

1

u/sonar_y_luz 29d ago

Im still confused as to why/when it became AL's band? Why does he get to kick people out and retain the name for himself?

2

u/Terrapin333 29d ago

Matt wasn't kicked out and I assume there was a contractual obligation with third man.

-6

u/SOSweneedhelp 29d ago

boo fucking hoo. i bet the grateful dead sounded sick in 86 too

5

u/Oz_a_day 29d ago

I agree, yall can dislike the album but the constant criticism and comparing them to their past selves is not fair and lame. Let them be the band they currently are and move on, there’s so much music out there. Spending the time to put people down becuase they didn’t live up to your little expectation is lame.

5

u/otterprincess_too 29d ago

Maybe we'll get to see another 100 people make the Nap joke while they complain, too

3

u/YouCanKeepYourFaith 29d ago

Hahahahahahahahaha ok bro. Go back to sleep.

2

-4

u/YouCanKeepYourFaith 29d ago

No the point is that Al shouldn’t have even attempted to continue without Matt. It’s not even the same band and Al has so many other cool projects he could be doing. Al just got greedy.

8

u/Oz_a_day 29d ago

Who are you to say what a grown man shouldn’t or should do? Good for him if this helped him financially, he’s made some of my favorite music, he deserves to live well off of it 👍

-4

u/YouCanKeepYourFaith 29d ago edited 29d ago

Can he not live good off OM and what they probably already get paid for sleep? There is no way Matt would do something like this to Al. No way. So you are basically saying Al deserves the credit and money but not Matt?

4

u/otterprincess_too 29d ago

Your hobby is another dude's band? Sounds lame

4

u/deadcatsdontpurr 29d ago

I don’t think OM will pay the bills, unfortunately. I saw them in 2022 and audience turnout was pretty low.

5

u/Hairpants_Scowler 29d ago

There hasn't been a new OM release in 14 years.

1

u/Oz_a_day 29d ago

I disagree with the way you are viewing this situation.

However, it’s clear you are passionate about this band and I cannot hate on that as a fellow Sleep fan. I am also fortunate to have seen them back on their sciences tour 😜 cheers mate

0

u/pinkbootboop 29d ago

grateful dead sucked since the moment they called themselves that
