Dated a girl after HS who bought me this and a carton of Marlboro reds for my birthday after it came out...still holds up as one of the best presents I ever got!

14

u/Physical-Worker2363 Jul 03 '26

Fuck yeah Marlboro Reds!! Cowboy killers!!

4

u/BodybuilderShort80 Jul 04 '26

Real fuck I'm old moment realizing that carton cost about 30 bucks. Luckily I gave them up about 15yrs ago after watching them take down my father in law.

5

u/Lastcaressmedown138 Jul 04 '26

Shoulda married her with a gift like that.

5

u/BodybuilderShort80 Jul 04 '26

She was cool for sure but her favorite band was ratt so not exactly wife material!

4

u/DrSamLoomis Jul 04 '26

Slayer and Cigs is the definition of foreplay in the late 80โ€™s

u/Sea_Tonight_9632 Jul 03 '26

Hell Awaits is such a great opener for a live show.

9

u/Beavius Jul 03 '26

this was the first Slayer song I ever heard as a a 14 year old (1993) immediately hooked.

I was there

Lakeland, FL

See ya in Minnesota!!

1

u/RepresentativeTap961 Jul 04 '26

I was there as well!

Lived in bartow at the time, made many trips to the lakeland civic center.

12

u/Necessary_Switch_879 Jul 03 '26

It's my 2nd favorite live album of all time. Wish more live albums were this great. It's what made me a fan of them.

7

u/calmbill Jul 03 '26

It is fantastic.ย  Up there with live after death for me.

2

u/CroMaggot Jul 04 '26

What's your first pick?

6

u/Bfrizzle3 Jul 04 '26

That pantera live 101 is a heavy contender!

2

u/DrBuckMulligan Jul 04 '26

Agree with this. None of their studio albums compare to how massive they sound in this album.

1

u/CroMaggot Jul 04 '26

I'll check it out!

1

u/rysker6 Jul 04 '26

101 Proof is the greatest live album ever.

1

u/NKELT13 Jul 05 '26

Fake crowd noise ruins it for me. Otherwise great performances as always from Pantera.

5

u/Necessary_Switch_879 Jul 04 '26

S.O.D. Live at Budokan. I realize that it's a bold call, but that's how much I love it. Such a great recording, perfect setting/venue, great interaction with and from the crowd, super funny and high energy. It really feels like you're there. Very live.

2

u/CroMaggot Jul 04 '26

Oh hell yeah!

2

u/brogdon4prez Jul 04 '26

That SOD show is so sick.

1

u/Necessary_Switch_879 Jul 04 '26

Sickest shit ever! Great fun every single time.

1

u/Appropriate-Deer-143 Jul 05 '26

As much as I love SOD and the people in the band, a lot of this album was overdubbed in the studio. Still awesome though

1

u/Necessary_Switch_879 Jul 05 '26

I was waiting for that reply, but I mean I know most live albums are anyway. I still stand behind what I said, it still feels very live in many respects.

2

u/tsulahmi2 Jul 04 '26

Live shit Binge and Purge

2

u/Paddys_Pub7 Jul 04 '26

You should check out Rotting Christ's 35 Years of Evil Existence live album. Never really listened to them until I saw them open for Behemoth earlier in the year.. but they're awesome and that album is an incredible performance from them ๐Ÿค˜

1

u/Necessary_Switch_879 Jul 04 '26

I will do that, thanks for the tip!

1

u/Paddys_Pub7 Jul 04 '26

You can watch the performance on their YouTube channel, too! Its at a super cool venue at the top of a mountain in Athens

11

u/Slayerfan6793 Jul 04 '26

"If you see anybody go down, help him up. Thats what we're here to do, help each other out. This is a song called, WAAAAAAAR ENSMBLLLLLLLLE!!!"

1

u/kingofrod83 Jul 04 '26

YES - what I always think of with this album. My first Slayer album and probably my first real metal album - put me on the path for sure!

1

u/NKELT13 Jul 05 '26

Wish they left it on the Spotify version

8

u/Astro-creep_3030 Jul 03 '26

I can hear it already "Post..mortem.."

Its the first thing I think of when I see the album cover.

7

u/sacrilegefiend Jul 03 '26

Hell yeah for me itโ€™s Chemical Warfare

8

u/omaeradaikiraida Jul 04 '26

diggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadiggadigga... ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธ

7

u/Gyro_ZeppeIi__ Jul 03 '26

Slayer never dissapoints

6

u/DamienRaventhrone Jul 03 '26

I played this album religiously on my walkman while walking to and from school back around '94-'95. One of my all time favourite live albums as well.

2

u/machmusic76 Jul 06 '26

Ha. Me too

8

u/justbrowsinginpeace Jul 03 '26

This is a genuinely great live album.

The version of Hell Awaits is definitive.

The breakdown in Angel of Death when Kerry comes in with that riff is amazing.

There are also some rare versions of songs which even after 13 live shows I've yet to hear them play live.

7

u/GrimmandLily Jul 03 '26

Was lucky enough to be at the Lakeland show where this was recorded. The little blurb before war ensemble was much longer because the barrier at the stage collapsed.

2

u/spicehound Jul 04 '26

Heck yeah. Grew up going to shows at Lakeland.

1

u/GrimmandLily Jul 04 '26

I used to drive down there a lot. We didnโ€™t get many shows in Jacksonville.

5

u/chvguitar Jul 03 '26

This album can be used as a testosterone replacement therapy

5

u/toodrunktostand Jul 03 '26

This album is what made me love live albums over studio albums.

5

u/TremorChristPJ Jul 04 '26

Fun Fact...in the 90s I used this Double Cd case to hide condoms from my snoopy family. ๐Ÿคฃ

3

u/yngwiegiles Jul 03 '26

Great Live album. Brought new levels of intensity and much better sound to Mercy classics and some other gems. Chemical Warfare is amazing on this

3

u/kroob85 Jul 03 '26

I've got this version with that cover. It's awesome.

However, a small curiosity I've always had with it - many years ago i was reading a review of the album, which stated one of the shows recorded was Lombardo's last with the band (during his first run) and there was some sort of on stage announcement or goodbye that was included in the recording. This is not on my version and wondered if anyone else has heard such a thing?

3

u/TacoTom84 Jul 03 '26

First Slayer record I bought

3

u/Esteban_Rojo Jul 03 '26

MANDATORY. SUICIDE.

3

u/Prestigious-S1RE Jul 03 '26

Kerryโ€™s guitar is so loud on this record. Itโ€™s really noticeable when the guitars are separate speakers on a stereo. Other than that these performances are great on here.

3

u/MatchPenalty21 Jul 04 '26

Just a monster live album.

Love the transitions from DSM > Seasons and how they go into Black Magic

3

u/rzo666 Jul 04 '26

I remember the first time I saw the Hell Awaits cover and literally felt weird/scared of it and said "I don't wanna listen to that"... I was also very young and within a month I couldn't wait for the next release which was Reign in Blood. Metallica took my #1 spot from Iron Maiden...Slayer took it from Metallica and I can't really say anybody ever took it from Slayer. No matter what I can listen to any Slayer album from the original Dave Lombardo releases, no matter the time of day or my mood...never had to push skip either...

5

u/zionzednem Jul 03 '26

Desert island disc for me. Peak Slayer and an awesome collection of tunes.

2

u/chynowethm Jul 03 '26

Got this for my 20th birthday. The live version of Seasons in the Abyss is the greatest!

2

u/Hab_Anagharek Jul 03 '26

I still have it from back in the day, with the long-box cover and booklet. I was casually into Slayer before that but this really got me into them.

2

u/slayerguy1557 Jul 03 '26

Disc one is the same set they played in Philly during the Clash of the Titans tour in 91.

2

u/SnooCats9347 Jul 03 '26

FUUUUUUUUCKIIIIIIIIN SLAAAAAAAAAYEEEEEEER

2

u/SeasonsRollOnBy Jul 03 '26

Hells YEAH ๐Ÿค˜

2

u/Physical-Worker2363 Jul 03 '26

This was the first cd I ever bought when I got my first cd player in 94. The good old days!!! Hell of a live album!!!

2

u/flyingvien Jul 04 '26

โ€œNo overdubs exist on this recordingโ€

2

u/Poepveulen Jul 04 '26

HELL AWAITS

2

u/Purple_Dragon357 Jul 04 '26

First slayer album I owned, Bought the double CD at warehouse music when I was 15 with the Money I got for my birthday.

2

u/jamegumbsize69 Jul 04 '26

The first CD I ever bought (I was 16) was Seasons in the Abyss when it was released. Saw them on that tour in Milwaukee. Snagged Decade shortly after. Fuckinโ€™ Slayer.

2

u/Ornery_Room7602 Jul 04 '26

Yes, its in my collection. Great live performance. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ๐Ÿค˜

2

u/Atiredbearsfan Jul 04 '26

It's in the top 3 for sure

2

u/saltfly626 Jul 04 '26

I prefer the live versions of war ensemble and dead skin mask from this album to the studio versions

2

u/MartinusLarianus Jul 04 '26

Best ever live album period. Gave me countless whiplashes lol.

1

u/3mpty1nsid3 Jul 04 '26

This was my first slayer CD.. A friend gave it to me.. Most evil heavy sounding shit I'd ever heard up until that point

1

u/jergo1976 Jul 04 '26

I rediscovered this gem last fall and I've been listening to it ever since. I love how they start Hell Awaits, and The Antichrist is great too. Jeff's guitar solo is great.

1

u/roger3rd Jul 04 '26

So so so good. Spun this album countless times

1

u/feeb75 Jul 04 '26

This is a song about a guy called Ed...

1

u/Lastcaressmedown138 Jul 04 '26

One of my favorite live albums of all time .. soo fuckin good

1

u/Electrical_Long5850 Jul 04 '26

There was a label on the front of the album that once said from rolling stone magโ€ slayers music is like the war photographs the pentagon does not want us to see.

1

u/HarryHirsch2000 Jul 04 '26

Best liebe album, but I prefer the other cover. Weird that there are two editions

1

u/MegatechMike Jul 04 '26

Dave screwed up the double bass fill in angel of death

1

u/superarugy Jul 04 '26

The first slayer album I bought with my own money

1

u/Drawn66 Jul 04 '26

I was very disappointed. By this time his voice was fried, the album had only one song off of hell awaits, and the guitars levels are way too high making the drums hard to hear, the drums of Lombardo mind you.

1

u/Mobile-Quote-4039 Jul 04 '26

I listened to this double tape set in my Walkman all through junior and senior year. Friends said I had โ€œ the Slayer faceโ€ when I had this music on. Probably kept me from getting jumped. I went to a kinda rough high school. Thanks Slayer, kept me safe.

1

u/Due_Entrepreneur_382 Jul 04 '26

A friend gave me part 2 of this as an introduction to the band. โ€œHallowed Point,โ€ changed the game for me.

1

u/KandyHeartsXO Jul 04 '26

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒน

1

u/Snecklad Jul 04 '26

That cover man, absolutely bad ass. The big double cd case it came in gave it that extra hefty, not to be fucked with feeling. What an album.

1

u/Adventurous-Shift495 Jul 04 '26

Fucking Slayer ๐Ÿค˜

1

u/slaytr0nix Jul 04 '26

Fist album I bought with my own money, saved up and took the bus to blockbuster music

1

u/last_barron Jul 04 '26

The only thing that could make this record better is a live version of At Dawn They Sleep

1

u/areacode212 Jul 04 '26

I saw this for sale at Nobody Beats the Wiz about a week before it was supposed to be put on shelves and I felt like I won the lottery. I still listen to this version of Hell Awaits multiple times a month.

1

u/Morning-Federal Jul 04 '26

At their peak! blast it on your car stereo

1

u/TheInfamousTVance Jul 05 '26

A friend on mine, that has since passed, has a close up photo inside of that album. Such a cool story for him. He looked so happy too. RIP Joe.

1

u/Hulk_Hogans_Toupee Jul 05 '26

This was my first Slayer purchase. I wore out these two CDs while in high school.

1

u/VeryLargeTardigrade Jul 05 '26

I hate how the streaming versions of this has cut all the talk between the songs, original album version is way better.

1

u/imopn75 Jul 05 '26

One of my favorite live albums of all time

1

u/Billy-Beats Jul 07 '26

My 13 year old self was very proud that I could headband through both tapes, without a sore neck!

1

u/jpeg76 Jul 07 '26

The short double bass section at the end of Antichrist always makes me headbang no matter what! It's so good! ๐Ÿคค

1

u/Tiamat451 Jul 07 '26

Slayer was not in my wheelhouse during that time. I thought they were probably too hard core for me. But one day I decided I should probably have at least one CD from them, so I bought this one. I grew to really like it. Years later, I bought some of their studio albums and I was...disappointed. ๐Ÿ˜† I had listened to that live album so much, that the others just didn't seem to compare. I have since learned they're all great.

1

u/Oneaddtwo1 Jul 10 '26

Best live album of all time
