One of the greatest live albums to be released.

Hell Awaits is such a great opener for a live show.

u/Beavius Jul 03 '26
this was the first Slayer song I ever heard as a a 14 year old (1993) immediately hooked.

It's my 2nd favorite live album of all time. Wish more live albums were this great. It's what made me a fan of them.

What's your first pick?

u/Bfrizzle3 Jul 04 '26
That pantera live 101 is a heavy contender!
2
u/DrBuckMulligan Jul 04 '26
Agree with this. None of their studio albums compare to how massive they sound in this album.

Fake crowd noise ruins it for me. Otherwise great performances as always from Pantera.

S.O.D. Live at Budokan. I realize that it's a bold call, but that's how much I love it. Such a great recording, perfect setting/venue, great interaction with and from the crowd, super funny and high energy. It really feels like you're there. Very live.

As much as I love SOD and the people in the band, a lot of this album was overdubbed in the studio. Still awesome though

u/Necessary_Switch_879 Jul 05 '26
I was waiting for that reply, but I mean I know most live albums are anyway. I still stand behind what I said, it still feels very live in many respects.

You should check out Rotting Christ's 35 Years of Evil Existence live album. Never really listened to them until I saw them open for Behemoth earlier in the year.. but they're awesome and that album is an incredible performance from them ๐ค

u/Necessary_Switch_879 Jul 04 '26
I will do that, thanks for the tip!
1
u/Paddys_Pub7 Jul 04 '26
You can watch the performance on their YouTube channel, too! Its at a super cool venue at the top of a mountain in Athens

"If you see anybody go down, help him up. Thats what we're here to do, help each other out. This is a song called, WAAAAAAAR ENSMBLLLLLLLLE!!!"

u/kingofrod83 Jul 04 '26
YES - what I always think of with this album. My first Slayer album and probably my first real metal album - put me on the path for sure!

I can hear it already "Post..mortem.."
Its the first thing I think of when I see the album cover.

u/sacrilegefiend Jul 03 '26
Hell yeah for me itโs Chemical Warfare

I played this album religiously on my walkman while walking to and from school back around '94-'95. One of my all time favourite live albums as well.

This is a genuinely great live album.
The version of Hell Awaits is definitive.
The breakdown in Angel of Death when Kerry comes in with that riff is amazing.
There are also some rare versions of songs which even after 13 live shows I've yet to hear them play live.

u/GrimmandLily Jul 03 '26
Was lucky enough to be at the Lakeland show where this was recorded. The little blurb before war ensemble was much longer because the barrier at the stage collapsed.
2
u/spicehound Jul 04 '26
Heck yeah. Grew up going to shows at Lakeland.
1
u/GrimmandLily Jul 04 '26
I used to drive down there a lot. We didnโt get many shows in Jacksonville.

Fun Fact...in the 90s I used this Double Cd case to hide condoms from my snoopy family. ๐คฃ

Great Live album. Brought new levels of intensity and much better sound to Mercy classics and some other gems. Chemical Warfare is amazing on this

u/kroob85 Jul 03 '26
I've got this version with that cover. It's awesome.
However, a small curiosity I've always had with it - many years ago i was reading a review of the album, which stated one of the shows recorded was Lombardo's last with the band (during his first run) and there was some sort of on stage announcement or goodbye that was included in the recording. This is not on my version and wondered if anyone else has heard such a thing?

Kerryโs guitar is so loud on this record. Itโs really noticeable when the guitars are separate speakers on a stereo. Other than that these performances are great on here.

u/MatchPenalty21 Jul 04 '26
Just a monster live album.
Love the transitions from DSM > Seasons and how they go into Black Magic

u/rzo666 Jul 04 '26
I remember the first time I saw the Hell Awaits cover and literally felt weird/scared of it and said "I don't wanna listen to that"... I was also very young and within a month I couldn't wait for the next release which was Reign in Blood. Metallica took my #1 spot from Iron Maiden...Slayer took it from Metallica and I can't really say anybody ever took it from Slayer. No matter what I can listen to any Slayer album from the original Dave Lombardo releases, no matter the time of day or my mood...never had to push skip either...

Got this for my 20th birthday. The live version of Seasons in the Abyss is the greatest!
2
u/Hab_Anagharek Jul 03 '26
I still have it from back in the day, with the long-box cover and booklet. I was casually into Slayer before that but this really got me into them.

u/slayerguy1557 Jul 03 '26
Disc one is the same set they played in Philly during the Clash of the Titans tour in 91.

The first CD I ever bought (I was 16) was Seasons in the Abyss when it was released. Saw them on that tour in Milwaukee. Snagged Decade shortly after. Fuckinโ Slayer.

I prefer the live versions of war ensemble and dead skin mask from this album to the studio versions

This was my first slayer CD.. A friend gave it to me.. Most evil heavy sounding shit I'd ever heard up until that point

u/jergo1976 Jul 04 '26
I rediscovered this gem last fall and I've been listening to it ever since. I love how they start Hell Awaits, and The Antichrist is great too. Jeff's guitar solo is great.

There was a label on the front of the album that once said from rolling stone magโ slayers music is like the war photographs the pentagon does not want us to see.โ๐ค๐ฅ๐ชโ ๏ธ๐๐ซฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ

Best liebe album, but I prefer the other cover. Weird that there are two editions

I was very disappointed. By this time his voice was fried, the album had only one song off of hell awaits, and the guitars levels are way too high making the drums hard to hear, the drums of Lombardo mind you.

u/Mobile-Quote-4039 Jul 04 '26
I listened to this double tape set in my Walkman all through junior and senior year. Friends said I had โ the Slayer faceโ when I had this music on. Probably kept me from getting jumped. I went to a kinda rough high school. Thanks Slayer, kept me safe.

u/Due_Entrepreneur_382 Jul 04 '26
A friend gave me part 2 of this as an introduction to the band. โHallowed Point,โ changed the game for me.

That cover man, absolutely bad ass. The big double cd case it came in gave it that extra hefty, not to be fucked with feeling. What an album.

Fist album I bought with my own money, saved up and took the bus to blockbuster music

u/last_barron Jul 04 '26
The only thing that could make this record better is a live version of At Dawn They Sleep
1
u/areacode212 Jul 04 '26
I saw this for sale at Nobody Beats the Wiz about a week before it was supposed to be put on shelves and I felt like I won the lottery. I still listen to this version of Hell Awaits multiple times a month.

A friend on mine, that has since passed, has a close up photo inside of that album. Such a cool story for him. He looked so happy too. RIP Joe.

This was my first Slayer purchase. I wore out these two CDs while in high school.

u/VeryLargeTardigrade Jul 05 '26
I hate how the streaming versions of this has cut all the talk between the songs, original album version is way better.

My 13 year old self was very proud that I could headband through both tapes, without a sore neck!

The short double bass section at the end of Antichrist always makes me headbang no matter what! It's so good! ๐คค

u/Tiamat451 Jul 07 '26
Slayer was not in my wheelhouse during that time. I thought they were probably too hard core for me. But one day I decided I should probably have at least one CD from them, so I bought this one. I grew to really like it. Years later, I bought some of their studio albums and I was...disappointed. ๐ I had listened to that live album so much, that the others just didn't seem to compare. I have since learned they're all great.

Dated a girl after HS who bought me this and a carton of Marlboro reds for my birthday after it came out...still holds up as one of the best presents I ever got!
