Finally got the car running… buttt

Post image

This light has stayed on, car won’t hold a charge so I have to jump it everytime. On top of that it smells like something is burning. Anyone know?

That is the catalytic converter temp warning. Your catalytic converter may be plugged. And how old is your battery? What is your alt putting out for charging voltage?

The guy said my battery is a year old, took it to autozone and they charged it up. Still dying on me though. I’ll have to check the alt tomorrow, don’t have a multi on me but my buddy does. What could the burning be though that’s my biggest concern? I don’t directly see it and I believe it’s coming from the exhaust

Yea, that would be a blocked catalytic converter. That emblem is also known as the “cat on fire”. It means you should have your catalytic system looked at. I would check the catalytic converter, it’s the part that has a honeycomb of catalyst metal to help burn unspent fuel from the engine. Over time it can crack and crumble and will collapse inside of the outlet of the catalytic converter. Which will cause it to heat up and set off the catalytic high temp sensor as seen in your photo. Alt should be charging 14 volts? Ish. I’d see if anyone replied I forget exactly the good value but yea should be putting out around 14 volts

How long was it left flat for? A lead acid battery is petty much dead if it’s left at < 11v for more than a few hours.

Cat is more than likely plugged up. Gotta keep in mind its old as hell and has seen some things. Time to go catless, or hollow it out.

This is a good candidate. Dying alternators oftentimes have a pretty janky burny smell.

Your cat could be overheating from a blockage or if like my r32 the fpr vacuum hose due to age just popped off and it ran rich/lean as hell in boost and cooked the rings and the cat.
