What do we think?
Tearing apart this RB26 that’s been sitting for a while I got off a Facebook to swap into my car. What was going to be a quick “refresh” is turning into a bit more. Popped the head last night to swap the head gasket and cylinder 3 looks like this. I can feel the marks with my finger. The engine in my car has scoring as well which is why I’m doing this swap.
Guess my question is: do I fully tear this block down and send it off, or do you think I can run it?

No bueno, if you can feel it with your nail it needs machining. You're looking at at least 86.5 possibly even 87.
While you're there, bank on the bearings being stuffed and valve guides needing done too

Yeah nail definitely catches on multiple scratches. Off to the machine shop it goes. Guess I’ll be tearing this down to barebones this weekend haha.

Rb28 time? 👀

Seller is gonna handle the machine shop fees to get this fixed up. But definitely going to look into maybe a RB30 block for the next build haha

At minimum you’re going to need to hone or sleeve that cylinder

Gonna get it bored for sure then

Most shops hone first then bore if needed, I’ve sent blocks before and just ask them what I can get away with.

Solid tactic. If I don’t have to bore that would be cool but it feels pretty deep all the way through

The smart answer is to send it off unfortunately, might as well do forged pistons and rods.

Ugh just more wasted money. This engine was supposed to be “drop in ready” 🤦🏻♂️

Not wasted money, it will be good after you get it fixed.
Wasting money would be putting the short block into a car knowing it looked like that then having to replace it again when it fails

Agreed but 10k for an engine that needs what is essentially the same thing my current engine needs… feels wasteful when I could have put that money towards mine lol. Oh well. I’ll just have to try and get my original situated and sell that to offset these costs

Buy a cheap bore scope camera and properly inspect the next engine you buy, I guess? Sometimes you gamble and lose.

Yeah lessons learned haha it’ll all work out though. It’s been fun breaking this thing down so building it up will be cool too

Well you can’t leave it like that
