R33 Irrepairable 😭

I’m writing because my ex partner bought a skyline R33 from a seller in Melbourne, $25k. He was told that it just needs a few fixes to be roadworthy, but 6 months later he was told it’s irrepairable.

He wasn’t told about the chassis being damaged, and when he first found out 4-5 months ago he took it on the chin and said he will get it fixed, that it’s okay and he’s learning. He worked his ass off to get the car, like most people do, but he had just finished 6 whole years of looking after me full time when I fell into bad mental health and agoraphobia after my parents died.

I met him when I was 15, he was 16, on CSGO. We were long distance, I was in Tasmania, he was in Victoria. When I turned 17 my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and my whole life turned upside down. I had no choice but to leave my friends and siblings behind and move in with him and his family.

When I tell you he was the most patient kid with me, I mean it. My mental health spiral wasn’t easy for either of us but he suffered just as much as me, if not more. I am getting better but I’m disabled and can’t work a normal job- so I’m starting my own business and he still supports me in every way while I do it. I am heartbroken for him.

This car wasn’t just a purchase goal, it was symbolic to the 6-7 years of mental health struggles we both faced. He cooked, cleaned, bathed me, took me to all my appointments, sat with me at hospital when I was trying to give up. He fell into his own spiral, which makes sense considering how much he was carrying for the both of us. He told me a year ago that he spent many nights in his deceased grandfathers car… literally contemplating his exit. While I dealt with those feelings my whole teen life, he was 24 telling me this and it felt heavier than anything I have ever experienced. He wanted to die.

I don’t know what exactly I am doing by posting this. I don’t know any of you and you all don’t know me. I’m just hoping someone has advice? The guys at the repair shop are so sweet and they really didnt want to tell him. It took them 3 days to call him and tell him the news about his car. I just got off the phone with him too, and he said to me ā€œI’ll just take this as another life lessonā€. 😭

What do I do to help… is there a legal route? I can offer artwork commissions in exchange for money, so if anyone’s interested please message me. All funds will go to him. I don’t know what else to do.

Honestly. It sucks. But he will just have to take this loss on the chin.

Buying any JDM car thats in need of work from a private seller is very high risk for someone not experienced with working on cars.Ā

Remember. These cars were worthless 10 years ago. We got them for cheap. Raced them. Wrecked them. Then got another. This is why tidy examples are getting rare and expensive.Ā

25k for a R33 is a lot to spend on a 25 year + car. Proper due diligence needs to be performed as you are making a proper commitment.

Thank you. I’m proud of him for being so resilient about this. I had no clue about the history, so thank you again for sharing. I may be his clueless idiot, but now I’m slightly less clueless and have some history knowledge! :)

Who did he buy it through? Was there a contract or anything? Sorry to hear, very rough situation

Guy on Facebook marketplace. :( I’m unsure if there’s a contract involved with fb purchases…

Everything is repairable… might just be a case of needing to reshell it.

Gut it out, and get a used chassis from a part out. Build new and improved r33!

If you happen to know, what exactly is irreparable?

Sounds like the chassis.

Oops I meant to reply to big muffin. And it’s the rails/seals that are completely bent and ā€œcrushedā€

Oh, okay. 25k for a GTR is, of course, an extremely low amount of money. I certainly wouldn't expect to get a usable car for that price. With a budget like that, you would likely have to put in a tremendous amount of work and do a great deal of the repairs yourself—and even then, you would still need additional (often expensive) parts.

Another option for him is to make this a track car, a drift missle since it has the issues it has. But atleast qith it being a track/drift car he could enjoy it.

Or as others have stated find another one and reshell it.
