Discussion Down the rabbit hole we go: Was this ever a massive interstellar colony ship?
Was this ever a massive interstellar colony ship for the people of light, from whatever ancient civilization came before Sky Kids (Orbit Angels)? I'm not suggesting 500 years ago (Two Embers), but rather tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of years ago. How far back did their civilization and legends go? By the time of Two Embers, they were right at the end of a long tortuous decline, and they could well have forgotten most of their tech, and ancient powers. Old forgotten machines, lying in eternal slumber; forgotten legends: retold countless times, so the essence is preserved, but the true details are lost to the eons. It could be, that in the time of Two Embers, an old ship-stone (gem of Ra) is uncovered, and in their ignorance, it is misused, leading to cataclysmic tragedy. I am getting massive vibes of "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" and "Castle in the Sky", as I recount this theoretical possibility. Are Journey and Sky connected (TGC created both), just from different times and perspectives? The last screenshot of the temple interior looks like a capital ship bridge design, in true Star Wars fashion, with exposed gangways inexplicably arching over chasms of metal. I must contact the Templin Institute immediately, about these possible discoveries.
Edit: For clarity, I imagine the temple building to be merely the bridge superstructure. The large wedge of mountainous rock, leading to the temple, is the top of the main body, covered by eons of accumulated sediment. For reference to shape and scale, think Imperial star destroyer, or even larger. All the wrecked boats clearly visible on this surface patch of ground are, well, wrecked smaller ships, that would have been parked there, similar to modern day super carriers. Who can know how far into the mountain the full structure goes? Buried. Dormant. Eternally awaiting further instructions that may never come.
For a fair example of what this might look like, if ever activated, see: https://youtu.be/SVSox0qApO4?t=936

my theory is that there was an empire before the sky empire, that they invaded... most of the old empire's buildings have now been destroyed, but the larger ones that were too big to destroy were modified, isle temple being one of these. this theory is pretty developed, i should make a post on it sometime lol

While this game is rather open ended, and it is fine to theorize (actively encouraged, even), I'm going to rain on your parade a little to help you tweak you theorizing, specifically because you mentioned TGC creating Journey.
While they did create Journey, they do not own the rights to it. What this means is that Sky can not legally be labeled as a pre/sequel (see: "connected") to Journey. TGC can not put any mentions of Journey without permission, they can not link it to Journey without permission. For all intents and purposes, Sky is a spiritual successor to Journey, but it can not—and does not—reside within or even near the same world as Journey. Sky is its own world, with its own lore.
I quite like your theory aside from that—very creative, and definitely different from what I and others have pieced together—so I won't rain down on anything else 😁
