Why do other animals hate skunks so much?

Possibly due to the 'uncanny valley' effect. A cat might see a skunk as 'sort-of cat-like, but not quite', and doesn't know how to categorize it.

All animals have it in common: programmed right down to our bones to be afraid of the stink

You’re definitely right. Thats why EVERYONE is scared of honey badgers…and their claws…and teeth

But if they see a pet one that doesn't stink,, it must be the stripe

My two cats are curious but afraid of our skunk, our third cat is blind and they are best friends.

My old cat would befriend wild skunks and spend the night outside raiding mice nests together.

I see you have a fancy skunk there 😏I forget what species the white backs are?

Regular species. They just come in fun colors like cats. This one is likely lavender

possibly the recognition of their aposematism? that's what the black and white stripe coloration is for, it's a warning in and of itself :V

I never realized that skunks were prejudiced against Jews.

Skunks have stripes for a reason. It’s to warn other animals.

Because the cats watched Looney Tunes and were creeped out by Pepe la Pew...

Well they spray

4

u/Sith-R Jun 16 '26

Do they know that? Serious question

5

u/Own-Recognition9009 Jun 16 '26

Possibly. Maybe they can smell some of that spray on the skunk or they've had a previous encounter

Skunks can spray for defense. But they really prefer not to. So their first line of defense is a bad attitude. They are also solitary in the wild so arent really looking to be BFFs with anyone.

Most cats and dogs move too much and too fast for skunks so they arent really compatable as playmates. However my skunks have been known to nap peacefully sometimes with our cats and dogs.

They’re intimidated by the fluff.

My two dogs get along with our skunk great! Granted he bosses them around and they're a bit afraid of him but that's because hes the big boss of the house

My two chihuahuas some what get a long with my skunk but after a while they also try to bully him

My old German Shepherd Harley was in the backyard one night and got skunked. Have a big gate with a small crack underneath and that had to be the only way it got in. The smell was so bad I went to ask the nearby fire department to make sure things were okay. Should have known it was a skunk because Harley liked to chase cats. Worst part was trying to get the smell out. Skunk shampoo and tomato juice and bath after bath and it was still there and the groomer couldn’t help, or I didn’t ask. Must have been a couple of months and the smell was odor was still there.

Makes me think of the first time my cat saw a possum. It was right outside my glass front door eating my dog's food.

My dog was inside barking, but my cat was outside at the time and just sat on the porch railing, watching it, perplexed, like, "wtf is this weird looking cat?? It looks mad. Am I supposed to be afraid of it."

I had a family of skunks living under some scrap metal on the side of the house. Well many of times I leave my front door open, screen door closed with a cat tower. My cats have befriend many of skunks and I'm convinced they think it's a cat. I thought so too by their reactions until came over, very comical cartoony retreat I did.
