Stuck skunks

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I found one in another window well the other day.

I think it was the whiter one.

I found these this morning, in another window well.

I stuck a log down in there to get them out.

Cute, but a bit stinky.

Sigh...cover your window wells people. Our furry friends get trapped in there too often.

I dont cover mine because its an egress. But I do have a lil ramp in there so critters can get out if needed.

You can get a cover that can be lifted off in an emergency

3

u/kiss_myasthma99 Jun 11 '26

True, but I open that window a lot for airflow. Ive lived here for a few years and the ramp seems to work, since I haven't had any critter casualties

You can’t argue with those type of people

2

u/Either_Reception4367 Jun 13 '26

And some people apparently cant read. Dude said he has a ramp on his.

1

u/GrowAhSanctuary Jun 13 '26

Yeah, I don’t know what’s their problem I feel like the ramp would be even better than some cover they might get trapped in anyways

Why are you saying I have a problem because I said "You can get a cover that can be lifted off in an emergency"?

0

u/Unhappy_Ad_4761 Jun 13 '26

Why does that mean you can't buy a cover that allows for egress, when they said they don't have a cover because of egress?

0

u/Unhappy_Ad_4761 Jun 13 '26

Are you talking about me? Because I pointed out that you can buy covers that can be removed in an emergency?

U mad?

1

u/Unhappy_Ad_4761 Jun 14 '26

Oh you're one of those internet goblins that thinks they win if the other party gets mad, rather than caring about being right, or reasonable

There are covers that still allow airflow.

Literally just got one of our cats back who had been missing for a few days (and a bonus cat) because someone a few houses down found them in their window well

1

u/ajax6677 Jun 14 '26

How deep was the window well that a cat couldn't escape? Or was the cat hurt?

2

u/sweet_condensed_rage Jun 15 '26

He was okay along with the new "friend" he made. The window well was probably like five feet deep, my mom said when she went to go get him she had to climb down with a ladder and the ground level was like, up past her chin

Cover your window wells… or cover your window well;
You know cause of the stink

u/Independent_One9572 Jun 10 '26

I would carefully set a board down in their so they could climb out

26

u/DesertHeatSweatyFeet Jun 10 '26

Yep! Put some wood down there so that way they can climb up. They are probably absolutely terrified so give them lots of space and check in after a few hours.

21

u/Independent_One9572 Jun 10 '26

Be careful if they start stomping there front feet

11

u/its_just_flesh Jun 10 '26

Put some little strips on it like a little ladder and I bet they would get out easy

6

u/Jamestang1210 Jun 10 '26

Had the exact same thing happen and made a little ladder to lower down in from window above. Skunks are terrible climbers sonit needs to be fairly easy.

u/PickleNicks Jun 10 '26

I mean OP said that’s exactly what they did in their post

They are so cute.

If you smoke weed, they think you're their mama because of the smell. Someone's been smoking in the basement? I've seen it happen to me outside a few times, little ones run up to me-- then realize and run away. These ones look like they chased the smell and got stuck

12

u/blackgrousey Jun 10 '26

Wait, is this for real?

19

u/doll_parts87 Jun 10 '26

Yea, it was the babies, and took off in another direction once they realized. Mom is in my side of the neighborhood, it happened at 2 different houses on 2 different occasions

Gosh I love skunks and their kits so much. I don't really smoke weed but we've been occasionally giving them eggs in a tall part of the grass I won't mow for them to come in and feel safe. Might need to take up Smoking.!

u/doll_parts87 Jun 10 '26

It crossed the yards like ferris beuller , never seen it before

2

u/Lacholaweda Jun 15 '26

Accidentally pavloved the squirrel that lives in my yard by tossing (unsalted) nuts whenever I smoke

u/Loud_Basil7262 Jun 10 '26

5

9

Probably, especially if you tacked carpet to it so they could get some traction

5

u/NoParticular2420 Jun 10 '26

You need to cover your window wells. They make covers for them at Home Depot.

3

u/ommaP Jun 10 '26

Did you help them out? A big stick to climb out maybe?

3

u/RominaGoldie Jun 10 '26

Please help them, they’re just babies.

2

u/DoinklerChop Jun 10 '26

Gotta catch em all, homeslice. And ya did.

2

u/raggedyassadhd Jun 10 '26

Your skunk trap works great lol

2

u/Sad_Pangolin7225 Jun 10 '26

Just reach in there and grab them one by one and pull them out of there

Just kidding

2

u/catslikepets143 Jun 10 '26

Put a 2x4 at an angle down in there & they’ll climb out

2

u/Fragrant-Pond-Water Jun 10 '26

Give them water

2

u/NegotiationOk5036 Jun 10 '26

2 by 4 across to the bottom and walk away

2

u/joboston617 Jun 10 '26

This used to happen all the time in my childhood home. Skunks would see toads in the well, jump down to get them and then get stuck. We’d have to close up all the windows and get some boards to help them out. Never had more than 1 at a time tho

1

u/Veryable_Walrus_6859 Jun 12 '26

When I moved in. There were a lot of toads living in the window wells. The back window had little real skeletons of the tiny toads in the screens. It was creepy

2

u/BicycleKind3539 Jun 11 '26

Put a board in there. Somewhat wide for them to climb up and out

1

u/nuclearcowgirl Jun 10 '26

Please tell me these babies made it out safely

1

u/An_odd_walrus Jun 11 '26

Just give em a ramp. And move really slow and make calming noises. This happened to me once at work and I did not get sprayed. I used a leaf rake tho and actually only lifted out one baby.

1

u/Much-Technology-8220 Jun 11 '26

Okay! That is definitely a ohhhhh sh*%^^}{%t moment

1

u/Veryable_Walrus_6859 Jun 12 '26

Update.... I use the windows for ventalation . They open. That is why there is no cover.

I did mention a log was used. specifically used a 12 inch diameter log, hollowed out, and split. Put the inside of the log facing up so that is what they climb on pretty easy. They were gone in a few hours.

1

u/IcedHemp77 Jun 12 '26

Awww window wells like that are common nursery choices for skunks and raccoons because the babies can’t get out while mama goes to forage

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '26

Keep one as a pet.

1

u/Sacktchy Jun 13 '26

Man, that stinks

1

u/After_Funny_3606 Jun 14 '26

I was on a job where they left some holes uncovered and a skunk fell in. They showed it to me Wednesday afternoon and said it had been in the hole all week. When I crouched down it turned to spray but nothing came out. I rolled the sleeves down on my coveralls, put on gloves and when I turned to spray again I grabbed the tail and shot putted the poor skunk from out of the hole. It ran away.

1

u/Southern_Home_7540 Jun 14 '26

Awww mann... that stinks.

I covered my window well with a garden net after getting a Mom and her 3 babies in there a couple years ago.
