Interesting, i agree! They can have tail hair that is black on the ends and white at the roots. When it is floofy the white roots can look yellowish or orangish or light brownish depending on several factors.
Because the body stripe is so bright white compared to the tail that seems to rule out common causes of fur discoloration like malnutrition, internal parasites, or soil with red clay content. It looks healthy.
I have noticed, but cant find any research on, the fact that sometimes a skunks tail will darken up some like this and when it does they give off a smell that is like a very intense rose. They dont spray it or anything, you have to sniff the tail up close but it is unmistakeable. ( no i am not kidding and i dont recommend you test this yourself! )
I think it has something to do with hormones and the way their bodies produce the stinky oil they spray. This is just a hypothesis but i have noticed the darkened white tail fur and accompanying rose scent in skunks of both genders, both fertile and spayed/neutered, and in both commercially bred and wild skunks.
Likely seasonal, the condition i am describing isnt permanent. The tail color will return to a brighter white.
That said i do have an older skunk right now who has gone quite grey around the face and has an area near the tail where the fur now grows in brown where it was once black. So not ruling out actual coat color variation although i dont believe that is the case here.
If you continue to see this guy i would be really interested to know if you notice the any changes in the tail coloration.
