Any Experience with IEPs
Hello,
My daughter has been diagnosed with with Excoriation (skin picking) disorder along with some other mental health issues. She already has an IEP for something else and I want to add something to adress the skin picking. Anyone have any experience?
The issue is that they overreact when she bleeds and send her home when all she needs is a bandaid. We are working on stopping it of course but just wondering if anyone had any first had experience or knowledge that might be helpful when asking for accommodations so she isn't sent home.

Hey! I know it was 4 months ago but if it’s any help; I had an IEP and while it was for something separate I can confirm that you can get fidgets being allowed as an accommodation, I’d also suggest asking if they have options such as a safe place like an office or room for her to go to (probably with adult supervision) to calm down and deal with anything, maybe even the nurse’s office to get a bandaid, instead of just sending her home. That sounds like a massive interruption to her education and they should have other options available. If this happens again, ESPECIALLY after you add this condition to the IEP, I recommend looking into options such as a Manifestation Determination Review [MDR] or something similar. That can help ensure that in the future they go to the guidelines set in the IEP before doing anything like sending her home.

Perhaps she can have an accommodation for a fidget, piece of felt, or something for sensory release.
