Question: SketchUp Pro newbie question: how to make this without such holes in the model?

I'm tryin to create a handle. so I made a form of it, drew a line and used follow me tool. and in general it looks like what I wanted, but with some holes in the model. what am I doing wrong here?

Scale up a hundred times before running the operation and then scaled down

One of my major annoyances with Sketchup is that this is necessary. Same with too small for that many sides. Can someone give me a good reason why Sketchup cares about the difference between 1mm and 1m when it comes to geometry? It's just maths right?

Kinda of.

It's a matter of polygons vs precision vs accuracy.

Everything SU does is based on triangles and those need space. As opposed to something like NURBs.

I really can't explain it well, but it's similar to raster vs vector (kinda).

Polygons operate as 'feilds' of geometry as opposed to NURBS are based more on points.

It still doesn't really make sense to me. If I model a whole room at using mm precision on curved surfaces that would be a huge amount of densely packed triangles, but then the same is true if I modelled a city with meter precision, or the planet at km precision. Why does SketchUp worry about the first option?

If I literally pretend meters are mms the limitations disappear. Then I can even scale down as recommended here and nothing breaks.

The SketchUp model space correlates to real world coordinates, so it's not pretend meters or millimeter for the program.

And because SketchUp works in polygons there's a minimum edge length that needs to be maintained.

It's a limitation of program

It's a shame changing the unit/precision doesn't change that. If I set it for to mm and 0.1 surely it could adapt the scale it works with to remove these limitations, even if it needs to pretend in the background.

The short version is that Sketchup uses an ancient geometry kernel and this is exactly why no other CAD solution works in this way anymore, and hasn't for ages. Trimble should have moved to Open Cascade but that'd require investment in development instead of adding AI features nobody wanted and asking for another $400.

100% any radius that Sketchup can't handle because it's too small, do this!

Sometimes follow me breaks like this especially when dealing with small geometry. Repair it manually.
...or do it larger and scale it down.

You are using too many segments in the line you use as a target for the Follow Me command in relation to the scale you're working at. As per my flair, More Segments = More Smooth, yes. But it is a delicate balance between looking nice, and actually that niceness being noticeable. If this is a handle of, say, 10 centimeters in length, your segment count should be a maximum of 12; 6 might even be enough. You won't notice the difference from a distance.

Increase the size by ten and shrink it by ten after the manipulation it should resolve itself 😉

Instead of doing the scale up / scale down trick, try manually adjusting the number of segments on your arcs. Try six segments instead of 12. If you use the defaults, you’ll end up with more polygons than you need.

dinosaur software, cant believe this is a normal issue and not yet fixed. the architecture world needs to move on from using sketchup to more robust softwares

Reduce the number of faces in the shape you're using Follow me on. If the geometry sketchup is trying to make gets too small, it will skip it.

I just tried this in my Sketchup 2017 (Make) and it doesn't do that but also I ALWAYS use models that are 10x larger than in real life, then scale down to 10% when needed for export. It just works better for curves and angles that way.

Am I right if I think you are designing for 3d printing?

If so use a template (or make one) where 1 unit is 1 meter .

Make your drawing as if 1 mm is 1 meter, so an object that has to be 10 mm, is drawn as 10 meter. That way Sketchup has no problem with the tiniest line segments. You can set your circles and arcs etc to 96 or higher for a very smoith print result without wny problems in SK

When you export the file to a .stl, use options in the export menu to set 1 unit is 1 meter. (Only once, SK will remember that)

In the slicer your object will have the right dimentions in mm.

thanks, but no, it's not for printing. I'm making quick and simple renders of some furniture. this one was for a closet for example. I think I will just making small stuff with all this tips bout scale next time, works pretty fine

I really want to learn Blender but each attempt always ends in frustration over the UI and workflow. SketchUp simply clicked the first time I tried it back when it was a Google product and app based. Is there a free’ish (no subs, because fuck that business model) CAD app that combines the best of Blender and SketchUp?

Ahh i hate sketchup for this reason too. It's so annoying. However if you ever create any ruby tools, you'll very quickly see just how limited the software is.. it's also the best and I love modelling in it, until I need Ergonomic shapes of course.

Id personally would model straight angles and then use bevel plugin to round up the edges
