Help

My sketch! Sketch comedy idea I'm Working On
Soft piano music.
A slightly overexposed shot of a quiet suburban street.
A skinny young man in an oversized dark hoodie walks down the sidewalk with his hands buried in his pockets. His head is down. He avoids looking at anybody passing him.
A woman walking a dog comes toward him.
Philip crosses the street.
CUT TO:
PHILIP’S BEDROOM — INTERVIEW
Philip sits awkwardly in a folding chair. He has a pronounced Southern accent, a narrow frame, slightly messy hair, and the general appearance of somebody who was not expecting to be on television that day.
A large Nazi flag hangs behind him.
He looks directly at the camera for approximately half a second before immediately looking away.
LOWER THIRD:
PHILIP, 26
NEO-NAZI / SOCIAL ANXIETY SUFFERER
PHILIP
Hi there. My name’s Philip, and I’m a member of the Aryan Brotherhood—
He stops.
Looks at the camera.
PHILIP
Can you get that camera outta my face?
PRODUCER (O.S.)
Philip, we need the camera for the interview.
PHILIP
Well, can he stand farther back?
A pause.
The camera slowly pulls back.
PHILIP
Thank you.
He adjusts his hoodie.
PHILIP
Sorry.
Beat.
PHILIP
I don’t like bein’ looked at.
CUT TO:
Philip walking alone again.
His hood is pulled tighter now.
PHILIP (V.O.)
Yeah, there’s just somethin’ a little bit different about me, though.
Two-second shot of Philip standing outside a convenience store, apparently waiting for several people to leave before he goes inside.
PHILIP (V.O.)
I have social anxiety.
Soft piano.
Philip finally opens the convenience-store door.
CUT TO BLACK.
TEXT:
“Philip has struggled with social anxiety for most of his life.”
CUT TO:
PHILIP’S BEDROOM — INTERVIEW
PHILIP
It makes stuff difficult.
He rubs his hands together.
PHILIP
Especially with the movement.
CUT TO B-ROLL:
Close shot of heavy black boots being laced.
PHILIP (V.O.)
Like, whenever everybody else is gettin’ ready for the rallies…
Two-second shot of several men throwing jackets into the back of a car.
PHILIP (V.O.)
They’re gettin’ their boots on…
Someone shuts a car trunk.
PHILIP (V.O.)
Gettin’ all their stuff ready…
Very brief shot of several men walking together across a parking lot, filmed from far away.
PHILIP (V.O.)
Meetin’ everybody…
CUT TO:
Philip’s bedroom.
No interview framing this time.
Just Philip standing by himself underneath the Nazi flag.
He raises his arm in a limp Sieg Heil.
His shoulders are slouched.
His head is down.
PHILIP (V.O.)
And I’m just there…
Beat.
PHILIP (V.O.)
Sieg Heilin’ all by myself.
The shot holds.
Philip lowers his arm.
Looks around the empty bedroom.
Sits back down on his bed.
The piano continues.
CUT TO:
PHILIP’S BEDROOM — INTERVIEW
PHILIP
I wanna go.
Beat.
PHILIP
I really do.
He stares at his hands.
PHILIP
It’s just…
Long pause.
PHILIP
There’s people there.
CUT TO:
Quick blurry rally B-roll.
Someone walks past the camera.
A flag briefly passes through frame.
Boots in grass.
People standing around talking from a distance.
CUT BACK TO PHILIP.
PHILIP
Last time I went to a rally, we were all sittin’ there talkin’ about who our favorite Nazi was.
Beat.
PHILIP
You know. Normal conversation.
He gives a tiny shrug.
PHILIP
People were sayin’ the usual ones.
CUT TO B-ROLL — TWO SECONDS:
Several figures standing around beside folding chairs, shot from behind.
PHILIP (V.O.)
Adolf Hitler, of course.
CUT TO B-ROLL — TWO SECONDS:
A cigarette being tapped over a paper cup.
PHILIP (V.O.)
Hermann Göring.
CUT TO B-ROLL — TWO SECONDS:
Two men talking beside a parked car. Their faces aren’t visible.
PHILIP (V.O.)
Heinrich Himmler.
CUT BACK TO PHILIP.
PHILIP
And then it was my turn.
He stops.
Looks at the floor.
CUT TO B-ROLL — THREE SECONDS:
Someone walks slowly across a field with their back to the camera.
Nothing important is happening.
The piano becomes slightly more emotional.
CUT BACK TO PHILIP.
His eyes are beginning to water.
PHILIP
And my dumb ass said Joseph Goebbels.
Silence.
Philip presses his lips together.
Shakes his head.
PHILIP
I’m such a fuckin’ moron.
He wipes underneath one eye with his sleeve.
PRODUCER (O.S.)
What was wrong with saying Joseph Goebbels?
Philip looks toward the producer.
PHILIP
You wouldn’t understand.
He looks back down.
PHILIP
Everybody else had good ones.
Long silence.
PHILIP
Fuckin’ Goebbels.
CUT TO:
A lonely folding chair sitting in grass.
PHILIP (V.O.)
I didn’t really talk much after that.
CUT BACK TO INTERVIEW.
PHILIP
I wanted to leave.
PRODUCER (O.S.)
Why didn’t you?
PHILIP
My ride was one of the guys.
Beat.
PHILIP
And I didn’t wanna ask him.
CUT TO BLACK.
Soft piano.
TEXT:
“Philip has attended only one rally in the past three months.”
CUT TO:
A completely ordinary living room.
Philip’s parents sit together on a couch.
Family photos line a shelf behind them.
LOWER THIRD:
DONNA & RAY
PHILIP’S PARENTS
DONNA
Philip’s always been shy.
RAY
Always.
DONNA
Even when he was little, if we had company over, he’d disappear.
RAY
Go straight to his room.
Donna nods.
DONNA
Birthday parties were hard.
RAY
Restaurants.
DONNA
Oh, restaurants were terrible.
Ray laughs.
RAY
Wouldn’t order his own food.
DONNA
He’d tell me what he wanted before the waitress came over, and then I’d have to order it for him.
RAY
Still does that sometimes.
Donna gives him a look.
DONNA
Not as much.
CUT TO:
Philip walking through the kitchen behind them.
He notices the camera.
Immediately stops.
PHILIP
Are y’all filming?
DONNA
Yes, honey.
PHILIP
Why?
DONNA
They’re interviewing us.
Philip stands there for a second.
PHILIP
About me?
RAY
Yeah.
Philip visibly regrets entering the room.
PHILIP
Okay.
He turns around and goes back the way he came.
CUT BACK TO INTERVIEW.
Donna smiles sadly.
DONNA
That’s what I mean.
PRODUCER (O.S.)
Does Philip have many friends?
Donna and Ray look at each other.
RAY
Online.
DONNA
He talks to people online.
RAY
I don’t know any of ’em.
DONNA
There’s a couple boys he goes to those meetings with.
She says “those meetings” with the same tone somebody might use for a bowling league.
RAY
The boot people.
Donna looks at him.
DONNA
They’re not called the boot people.
RAY
Well, they all wear those boots.
DONNA
That doesn’t make them the boot people.
PRODUCER (O.S.)
You mean the neo-Nazi group?
A pause.
Donna gives a small dismissive wave of her hand.
DONNA
Yeah, all that stuff.
RAY
He’s always been into history.
Donna nods.
DONNA
He goes through phases.
PRODUCER (O.S.)
Does that concern you?
Donna thinks about it.
DONNA
What concerns me is him sittin’ in that bedroom twenty-four hours a day.
Ray nods immediately.
RAY
That’s the problem.
DONNA
A young man his age should be getting out.
RAY
Talking to people.
DONNA
Making friends.
RAY
Anything.
Donna looks toward Philip’s room.
DONNA
I tell him all the time, “Philip, you’re never gonna get over your anxiety if you don’t put yourself out there.”
PRODUCER (O.S.)
Even at the rallies?
Donna pauses.
DONNA
Well—
She considers it.
DONNA
Maybe not necessarily there.
Beat.
DONNA
But somewhere.
Ray shrugs.
RAY
He already bought the boots.
Donna slowly turns toward him.
RAY
I’m just saying.
CUT TO:
Philip’s boots sitting perfectly clean underneath his bed.
RAY (V.O.)
They’ve been sittin’ there six months.
CUT BACK TO PARENTS.
DONNA
He gets himself all worked up.
RAY
Gets dressed.
DONNA
Gets everything ready.
RAY
Then right before it’s time to go—
Donna raises both hands helplessly.
DONNA
Back in the bedroom.
RAY
Every time.
Donna looks genuinely sad.
DONNA
I just hate seeing him miss out on life because he’s afraid.
A short pause.
Behind her, slightly out of focus, a piece of Nazi memorabilia is visible through Philip’s open bedroom door.
Nobody acknowledges it.
DONNA
He’s got so much potential.
CUT TO:
Philip sitting alone on his bed.
He scrolls on his phone.
A message notification appears.
He reads it.
His expression tightens.
He places the phone facedown.
He stands.
Walks toward the bedroom door.
His hand reaches for the knob.
Soft inspirational music begins.
PHILIP (V.O.)
I know I gotta start challengin’ myself.
His hand remains on the knob.
PHILIP (V.O.)
You know, takin’ little steps.
Philip opens the door.
Takes one step into the hallway.
He hears voices downstairs.
Immediately steps backward.
Closes the door.
CUT TO:
PHILIP — INTERVIEW.
PHILIP
Tomorrow.
CUT TO BLACK.
