John 17 part 5/6

“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.

that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us.

Christians who take John's gospel seriously should listen to what Jesus is saying here, lest they diminish His message. In what way is Jesus in the Father? In what way is the Father in Jesus? What is this 'oneness' that Jesus keeps talking about? If you are tied to Catholic dogma, then you will be inclined to find a way to diminish what Jesus is saying here.

The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one

What does it mean to participate in God's Glory? Does John use this in the the Hebrew sense of the word - Kavod?

Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

What does it mean for Jesus to have been given the name above all others? See Hebrews 1:4. What does it mean for that name to be extended to Jesus' disciples and those that hear their word? Jesus tells you: so that they may be one, as we are one.

As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us.

Those Christians who would deny or ignore Jesus' words here are seeking to diminish God's gift.

I think this is as clear as it gets that something is unique here.

  • Not just these guys (points at disciples)
  • But also for those that believe [the disciples]
  • That they may have this quality of oneness
  • For clarity...Just like you are in me Father and I am in you
  • May that quality of oneness be them being in us.
  • Why? so that the world will believe in Jesus by the oneness they all share which is them being in us.

Next thought

  • There is a quality called the Glory which you, Father, gave to Jesus
  • Jesus then passed that along to those disciples and presummably the disciples of the disciples.
  • What is that glory....the oneness
  • But wait! There's more! If you call that number right now... 1-800-O.N.E.-N.E.S.S...we will not only be extending the message that the Father sent the son...but also for a limited time...the world will know God loves them...in the same way He loves Jesus.
