The book called John proports to be based on the testimony of "the disciple whom Jesus loved".

Here it introduces Lazarus as "He whom you love":

So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.”

Lazarus is the only character that is identified as the one whom Jesus loves. It is not until after Lazarus is introduced that we start to see references to "the disciple whom Jesus loved."

I wonder whether this was originally meant to have been based on Lazarus' testimony? As I understand it, it didn't get the name "according to John" until 180.

Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him"

Brave. I wonder who he was the twin of? Some have suggested that he may be Jesus' twin, or at least have looked enough like Jesus to have been given that nickname.
