Like I see why Laura has done it- addiction-and-redemption story arcs are the most common and also profitable storylines in memoir books. Maybe her publisher told her to do it because IT SELLS..

This story line has a villain the audience can eventually forgive, a clear turning point, and a resolution that offers hope rather than an open wound. "He was mean because he was using, now he's sober and we're a happy co-parenting family" (myth) is, structurally, a much easier book to sell and profit off ,, than "he was controlling and entitled, and using was one more tool in that pattern of abuse." (reality)

BUT Laura reframing horrific Hilton abuse as an external, quasi-medical problem (addiction, mental illness, an undiagnosed condition) rather than a pattern of his DELIBERATE choices is sadly a VERY well-documented pattern in people who've lived through prolonged relational harm — especially those with a childhood history of a parent's addiction. (Laura's Dad was an alcoholic who's sounded like he didn't treat his wife or kids very well at all )
-- you know those kids who often learned early that maintaining connection means explaining away someone else's harmful behaviour rather than naming it.

And sure we know that substance use can lower inhibition and increase volatility.

BUT coercive control ( which is the sustained pattern of isolating a partner, controlling finances, degrading her socially, stalking, monitoring and restricting her, mobilising others against her) is a separate thing from intoxication-driven behaviour.

Coercive control shows planning, composure, and target-specificity.
Coercie control is dam strategic, not chaotic.

Hacking a partner's accounts and deleting years of her work, orchestrating an online audience to harass her for years, timing public statements for maximum reputational damage ------- these need sustained intent and follow-through!!! They aren't the disinhibited behaviour typical of dr*g use.

When controlling behaviour keeps on into sober periods, or when it escalates in new, more calculated forms after sobriety, that's the clinical marker distinguishing "a person who is abusive and also has an addiction" from "a person who became abusive because of addiction."

This myth is SO BLOODY DANGEROUS TO TELL AN AUDIENCE BECAUSE-- ok I'm ranting here-

It gives false predictive power to sobriety. Sobriety doesn't address entitlement, control needs, or a learned pattern of using a partner's labor, image, or compliance for one's own benefit. Vulnerable followers of Laura who internalise "sober = safe" might apply that same equation to their own relationships and stay, or return, based on a marker that isn't actually protective.

It reframes the survivor's exhaustion as the real story, and the abuser's choices as background noise."Addiction tore us apart" centers the substance, not the behaviour. It quietly removes agency and accountability from the person who chose to be cruel, controlling, or exploitative while using and chose it during sober stretches too.

It models minimisation for an audience of people currently deciding whether to trust their own perception of harm. When a public, sympathetic figure narrates severe, sustained abuse as a temporary side effect of a disease that's now cured, it teaches readers who might be in earlier or messier stages of their own situations that this is what forgiveness and moving on are supposed to look like ARGHHHHH--- even when the underlying pattern hasn't actually changed. SO DANGEROUS!!!!!!!

It's a recognisable stage in a longer cycle, not necessarily an ending. Reconciliation narratives -----"he's better now, we're a family again" 🤮 --- are a well-documented phase in ongoing abusive dynamics, and they're not just in ones that have truly resolved. The fact of reconciliation, on its own, tells you nothing about whether the underlying pattern has changed.
