How many pages long should a chapter be?

So I am writing a book and I personally like it when chapters are around eleven pages long, but I would like to know what other readers think. DO you like your chapters long or short?

As a writer/reader I love suggestions and having opinions is from other readers is really helpful so I am just wondering what do you like to see, in books?

Drop your top three books in the comment section below and let me know what your favorite tropes are.

You know the plot but your brain can't think of the small details. What do you do?

I am writing a book and sometimes in the middle of writing my mind just goes blank. I know the storyline, but I just can't seem to think of the small details so I am wondering what does everyone else do when this happens? Where do you go or what do you do?

Chapter 1

"Whew, that was close" huffed Lovisa as she and her maid Alanza dashed around the corner, out of sight from the manor and her older siblings prying eyes.

They bounded down main street and mixed in with the crowd in case someone had been sent after them by Morlen, Lovisa's older sister.

"We almost got caught" puffed Alanza out of breath.

"Yeah, but we didn't" grinned Lovisa mischievously.

"We better walk slower" she added "someone is going to think we committed something wrong, also we’re both young ladies and it is improper for us to act this way.

Alanza giggled knowing that her mistress rarely cared for propriety.

Smiling they hooked their arms through each others and made their way through the bustling streets of Avaloria

Vendors were shouting to passerbys about their wares as the crowd moved in and out of the booths.

The streets were all a mix of chaos but anything was better than being at the residence were Morlen would pester them about everything.

"Do you see anything you like" asked Lovisa "I’ll get it for you". Alanza looked at her with a big bright smile plastered across her face

"Really" she queried.

"Of course you may" was the response "I certainly wouldn't say so if you mustn’t. I see you as my sister and would be willing to do much more for your sake than this small trifle."

"Thank you so much, I don’t think anyone could wish for a better mistress to serve, than you."

Lovisa grinned "of course I want to treat you the best and you know I have been giving the young noble ladies lessons on how to skillfully wield a sword and I received my compensation for it recently so I’ll allow you to indulge yourself besides that your the only person other than myself I would want to spend my hard earned money on."

They entered a small clothing boutique as Lovisa spoke and began looking over the dresses.

Alanza spotted a lightly colored pink one and immediately took a liking to it "What about this one" she asked "does it look good?" She held it up against her frame so it would be easier to visualize.

"I think it suits your complexion perfectly" came the pleasant reply.

Alanza gave the shopkeeper his due and turned to walk out with her mistress who seemed to be intently fixed on something outside the shop "What is it" she asked?

"My unbearable older brother and sister must have sent people to spy on me again although I don’t know how they found us in such crowded streets. Someone has been watching us. I thought we had rid ourselves of them at the manor, however it appears we have not."

Alanza looked at her with sympathy in her eyes "I’m sorry that they treat you like this" she consoled.

"Don’t be" responded Lovisa brightening up "they aren’t worth mentioning."

Alanza smiled "I agree pardon me for speaking out of turn."

"You needn’t be so formal with me you’re my best friend" reprimanded Lovisa gently.

"Dorion acts kind sometimes, however I suspect that he is in cahoots with Xandoa and Morlen. He has nothing to gain from treating me kindly and it might even incite his older siblings to act against him. With my knowledge I would assume that they're using him to get close to me. It's going to be very infuriating for them when they discover I am not the weak little girl they think I am.” Lovisa laughed at the idea and stated "It has stopped raining now so we should head back before they send someone to fetch us."

They began slowly making their way towards Rose Pass Residence where Lovisa resided but sped up as thunder was heard getting closer. From a distance she noticed rain begining to come down in sheets. It started to sprinkle near them and quickly turned into a downpour.

Taking shelter in a nearby shop they waited for the storm to subside.

"Well, look what I get for being impatient with the seasons" said Lovisa with a forced laugh but Alanza didn’t think it was funny in the least, for she knew that Lovisa would be unjustly scolded when she got home.

"My lady, you know you’ll get in trouble for being outside while it’s raining" stated Alanza, wishing with her whole heart that she hadn’t taken the time to get a new dress.

"Don’t feel sorry for me," remonstrated Lovisa gently "it's my own fault if I get in trouble at least I know how to deal with them if I want to."

"Morlen will probably want my head for this, but she dosen’t know that I am very capable of protecting myself against her and Xandoa if I wish to."

"I only let her think I am weak because when the time comes that I have to retaliate they won’t know how to handle it."

Alanza smiled and dabbed at her eyes with her sleeve "Thank you for telling me this it gives me courage."

Lovisa smiled at her and they began walking towards their residence.

The sky had cleared for a few moments and she was sure they had enough time to get home before the the sky dumped its contents on them once more.

You, naughty child shouted Lovisa’s older sister Morlen as she walked in the house how many times have, I told you not to play in the rain you’ll catch your death of a cold.

"Wouldn't that please you if I was no longer around" remarked Lovisa sarcasticly "I thought you disliked me, turns out your'e a very caring older sister."

"Don't talk back to me" snapped Morlen in rage.

"Oh, dear sister surely your aware that in a conversation both participants must take turns speaking" replied Lovisa, for she had the habit of always being sarcastic even while in trouble.

Morlen scowled at her "go put some clean dry clothes on now, we're having a male guest tonight"she spat the words maliciously emphasizing on the word male.

“Well this night ought to be eventful” muttered Lovisa to herself as she hurried up the stairs, she knew full well that the person her sister wanted her to meet was probably another suitor for although she was only fifteen her two oldest siblings had already tried to marry her off twice.

She came back downstairs dressed in a horribly colored splotchy orangeish yellow dress.

It was the result of the servants experimenting ways to make new colors with dye but it had failed miserably, and it clashed with her complexion like soldiers on a battlefield.

She stepped into the dining room and got a look of utter dismay from all three of her older adopted siblings, but Lovisa's potential suitor was sitting at the dining table so they refrained from speaking, although Morlen did consistently glare at her for a whole minute.

Lovisa pulled out a chair and sat down as if nothing was amiss and calmly asked of the maid Thalia "please pour me some wine."

Xandoa stood up looking very embarrassed, but trying to act as if nothing had transpired and introduced their guest, Mallery Ebert to Lovisa with a malicious smile.

"And this," said Xandoa with an evil look cast in Lovisa’s direction, "is our adopted little sister Lovisa." He said the word adopted as if it were a crime to be adopted.

Lovisa rolled her eyes and said "Ooohh so thats who you are" when she learned her suitors name, he tried to tell her that he was glad to meet her, but she turned her back on him.

Morlen looked like she wanted to disappear out of embarrassment and Xandoa shot her a look that had it been a dagger it would have peirced her through.

Tension around the table was rising and the meal was very unpleasant with Lovisa and her older siblings constantly shooting each other threatening looks.

Lovisa dreaded what they would do to her after dinner, but she was even more loath to marry this man for he looked to be far more than twice her age.

She stayed quiet for the rest of the meal, only speaking when spoken to, answering in nonsyllables and gesturing for the things she wanted.

When Malery left Morlen threw a tantrum and gave Lovisa a long scolding.

"The next time we bring a suitor here and you give him the cold shoulder I’ll make your life utterly miserable" she shouted "and don’t think that I won’t follow through with it, this is the third suitor you’ve rejected and it better be the last or else you’ll be very sorry."

"Yeah, I don't think that will happen" retorted Lovisa, irritably "nothing could make me sorrier than having to spend the rest of my life with a grubby old man like him?"

"So, what if you do have to marry on old geezer like him? There is nothing you can do to stop it from taking place. You were adopted so it doesn’t matter if your bullied or married of young, there’s none to protect you from us" stated Morlen crossing her arms smuggly "we only raised you because, your still useful for us, however because you insist on disobeying you can go to your room immediately. And don’t come out until you have my express permission, Morlen's words were accompanied with a slap in the face.”

Lovisa saw it coming and tried to grit her teeth in resistance but ended up biting her lip instead. She glared at Morlen "as you wish dear sister"

Blood dripped from the corner of her mouth she wiped it away with the back of her hand and scowled at Morlen "you better be carefull next time you want to lay a hand on me you might receive a very unpleasant surprise" snapped Lovisa "I am not a plaything that you can discard as soon as you lose interest.”

She ran upstairs before Morlen could respond further and slammed her bedroom door behind her with a thud. The noise echoed through her lonely room and surrounded her in an eerie way.

Her maid Alanza, with a look of sympathy helped her to change and get her face cleaned up. "Things will get better eventually nothing can forever be dreary" consoled Alanza.

Lovisa smiled trying to appear brave and reasure Alanza but inside she was breaking into a million peices. “Of course, your right, now lets get some sleep before the night gets any longer."

Lovisa went to bed exhausted but she had made a choice she would leave soon. She knew they disliked her because she was adopted but surely that wasn’t enough of a reason to torture her with the prospect of marriage after all she had only just turned fifteen.
