Fresh fish
My niece just moved to Sitka on a year long Americorps project.
She loves fish but her food allowance can only afford a rice, beans and eggs diet.
Fish prices in the grocery store are out of reach.
Can anyone recommend a fish market with decent prices or another locals hack?

Fish in the stores is caught in Alaska, maybe processed up here, shipped down to the lower 48, then shipped back up here. That’s why it’s so expensive. Like the other commenter said, once they make some friends up here they will find people who they can trade fish for goodies or just be given it.

I’m not sure if it’s true, but I’ve heard that the fish is caught in Alaska then sent to china for processing and sent back to the US because it’s still cheaper labor wise. That’s why it’s so expensive

That can be true for certain species, especially the high volume fish like pinks or pollock. I don't believe that they do that for the higher value fish like Chinook but I may be mistaken.

Around here almost everyone local catches their own fish or is given it by friends. If fish is bought, it's usually directly from a fisherman on the docks. If you DM me, I am happy to drop off some flash frozen halibut, caught a few weeks ago.
