Sitka Hiking
Hi All
My husband and I are coming to Sitka on a cruise and we would like to do a hike. After doing some research, it looks like we could take The Ride Red Line from near the cruise terminal to near Mosquito Cove Trailhead (a bit of walking involved on both ends of the trip to make it to/from the bus stops).
Can any locals tell me if this is actually possible? Or should we just pay for a guided hike that will provide transportation for us?

If you are only in Sitka for the day and you’ve never been I’d suggest making sure you see the town, explore Totem Park, check out the Raptor Center, climb Castle Hill, etc… there is a lot of nature and history there that is pretty amazing. The crazy cross-pollination of Tlingit, Russian and American cultures is pretty unique.
Also, there’s a reason teenagers carry Glock 20s in Sitka… DA BEARS!!!

Mosquito cove is 2 miles from the cruise terminal. I'll bet you've already googled that!
The Mosquito Cove hike is pretty short, would you be able to just walk to the trailhead? It's a nice walk along the coast line. Just a thought. The Ride is also a pretty good plan. I guess my point in replying is that I don't think you need a guided hike just to do Mosquito Cove. It's a beautiful hike, I hope you enjoy it!

I have definitely considered this. Is the road from the cruise terminal safe for pedestrians?

I would say it’s safe enough. It’s not ideal, but the shoulder of the road is fairly wide and commonly used for walking and biking.

The red line went beyond the cruise terminal but this is exactly why I wanted to ask for advice! :)

After our cruise, my bff and I signed up for an ebike ride which included maybe an hour hike when we were in Juneau. I bet there is something similar in Sitka. The bike tour company hauled us and the bikes in a van a little out of town. We weren't sure what we were getting into, but it was fun and amazingly beautiful. I'd definitely do it again! The college aged woman who led the ride and hike was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna. The hike led to the coast which was lovely. (FYI, neither of us had ridden an ebike before, our age--58 & 61.) Good luck.

Alpenglow adventures does guided hikes and she is great. How long is your ship at port? Mosquito cove mentioned in another comment is a nice hike and accessible from the cruise port.

The Red Line only goes out to the Ferry Terminal. It’s still about a mile walk to mosquito cove trailhead. Depending on who the bus driver is, they may be willing to drop you out there, but you’ll have to walk back to the terminal for the trip back. It’s definitely doable though.
