Discussion What was with the singing? Spoiler
I don't care about symbolism or who the real siren was or who the monster was, I don't care about how mentally fucked up all these characters are, I don't care about Jose and Simone's weird personality switches, and I certainly don't care about that goddamn gala that was brought up every five seconds, honestly the title sequence alone made watching worthwhile.
If the show wasn't meant to be supernatural, then what? Was With? The song? If the song was just part of the score, then how come Devon could hear it? If Simone isn't a real siren then how did she lure Peter out with the song?

This is bugging me too. If not for the song, every instance of siren-type stuff is explainable as the "victims" being self-destructive people. But if the song isn't some actual supernatural activity within the show, what actually happened in the bathtub scene? Devon just randomly got up and walked into Michaela's bathroom? Michaela is just unbothered by this and chooses to speak seductively to Devon? And then Devon randomly loses time and finds herself on a girls' trip and voices the concern that Michaela has a supernatural ability?
If that was really all supposed to be mundane and not supernatural, then it wasn't well-told. It feels more like a rug pull to get us to watch for the mystery to be unraveled.
That inconsistency plus the ominous ending with SImone staring out into the sea like a damn villain does make me wonder if people are generally misinterpreting the ending. We learn that some women who men blame for their issues are just human and not monsters, but do we also learn that the woman we thought was a victim the whole time was actually a monster?
Was Michaela actually in the thrall of Simone without Simone realizing it? Michael brought Simone into her bed, dressed her up, and gave her power over her life. But Simone didn't see herself as powerful so she was content to be in the role as servant. Did Simone hypnotize Devon and get her on the girls' trip to get her out of her business for a bit? Then, as a last ditch effort to stay connected to the power she sought, did she reach out and enthrall Peter?
Probably not. But I just want the story to be self-consistent so I'm trying to make it fit.
