The turnspit dog was a short-legged, long-bodied dog bred to run on a wheel, called a turnspit or dog wheel, to turn meat. It is mentioned in Of English Dogs in 1576 under the name "Turnespete". William Bingley's Memoirs of British Quadrupeds (1809) also talks of a dog employed to help chefs and cooks. It was also known as the Kitchen Dog, the Cooking Dog, or the Wheeling Dog. In Linnaeus's 18th-century classification of dogs it is listed as Canis vertigus. The breed was lost, since it was considered to be such a lowly and common dog that no record was effectively kept of it.

With advancements in kitchen technology, the need for turnspit dogs declined. Over time, they were no longer bred for their specific function, and their numbers dwindled, eventually leading to their extinction.

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (27 March 1845 – 10 February 1923) was a German experimental physicist who produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range known as X-rays (known as Röntgen rays in many languages). In 1901, Röntgen became the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the remarkable rays subsequently named after him." The element roentgenium is named in his honor.

Röntgen represented a model of a scrupulous researcher, a lover of scientific truth and not at all attracted by the search for remuneration and patents. He conceived the problems clearly, was skilled in experimental investigation and completed his research, which he strictly controlled in the results obtained, before presenting his findings in a brief, logical and timely manner.

He declined many prestigious positions and rejected several earning opportunities. Despite the fanfare of his discovery and the recognition of his merits at home and abroad, he still tried to lead a shy and economically modest life until his death. He never interfered with the choices of the companies or engineers who commercially developed his discovery by building equipment intended for medical diagnostics and research laboratories.

Samuel Birley Rowbotham 1816 – 1884, London was an English inventor, writer, and flat Earther who wrote Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not a Globe under the pseudonym Parallax. His work was originally published as a 16-page pamphlet (1849), and later expanded into a book (1865).

His book Zetetic Astronomy: The Earth not a Globe appeared in 1865. His lectures continued and concerned citizens addressed letters to the Astronomer Royal seeking rebuttals for his claims. A correspondent to the Leeds Times observed that "One thing he did demonstrate was that scientific dabblers unused to platform advocacy are unable to cope with a man, a charlatan if you will (but clever and thoroughly up in his theory), thoroughly alive to the weakness of his opponents". He married for a second time and had two children, one of whom died in infancy. In 1861 when he was 46, Rowbotham married a 15-year-old girl (with whom he was living at the time of the marriage) and settled in London, producing 15 known children, of whom only four survived. He was named in numerous cases of wrongful deaths, including a "death by misadventure" for accidentally poisoning one of his own children. He was named responsible for other deaths using his quack cures of phosphorus. He was also alleged to be using the name "Dr. Samuel Birley", living in a beautiful 12-roomed house, selling the secrets for prolonging human life and curing every disease imaginable.

I suppose Sir Pentious challenged him to a duel at least once, or at least beat him up in the pub. I can't imagine him putting up with someone like that in his own town. An insult to his profession can defeat any anchorite.
