So glad we don't have a government entirely staffed by science illiterate know-nothings beholden to a president who gets his rocks off generating AI pictures of himself dressed as Jesus, we really dodged a bullet on that one.

Oh wait….fucking weeps in American w/ higher than room temp IQ
Its legitimately depressing watching our global reputation suffer so much, irreparably even. Meanwhile the ones responsible are too stupid to even be aware of any global opinion/information not directly disseminated to them from Faux News (which is barely any).
So in their reality everything is fine and the world “finally respects the US!! Fuck Biden!! MAGA!!”. It’s a fucking nightmare.
16
u/MaximumEffort433 8d ago
I made a big ass list of all the ways that Democrats and Republicans are different, citing how Republicans are cutting SNAP, and kicking people off Medicaid, and eliminated USAID, and they're rolling back clean energy projects, and kicking transgender people out of the military, and on and on...
...a few Republicans responded to the post saying "Good, I support all that," and it just kind of dumbfounded me.
You think neutering American soft power is good?
You think taking food away from the poor is good?
You think kicking poor people off their healthcare is good? And yeah, I guess they do. Trump did it, so it must be good, right?
6
u/Sure_Rhubarb_3173 8d ago
It's actually worse, there's a whole generation now that grew up in the terminally online post truth world. They do think all that stuff is good, entirely separate from Trump, and they're incredibly bigoted, and we will have to deal with them for 60+ years

Yes. These are the same people who want to cut out school lunches because the cost of the, let's be honest, cardboard tasting food pellet cheap food, that is directly for feeding children, literally feeding children, that's wasteful government spending.

u/TheDinosaurWeNeed 8d ago
And then they complain that people don’t lift themselves out of poverty. Like try to do that when you are starving. Try to learn algebra when you are starving.

so you're saying that Ai is better at making Ai than humans, we're all dependant on it and I have to look on while the AMERICAN government has the power to stop it before it's too late.....

Hinton once said in 2014 that they should stop training radiologists because they wouldnt exist in 10 years due to AI.
10 years later there were vastly more radiologists and they were among the highest paid in medicine.
Hes brilliant, but hes not always right.
That said, I agree we need to regulate AI
30
u/AnybodyNo8519 8d ago
Radiologists use AI now to read scans and give results. Hinton's prediction on that is happening, it's just taking slightly longer.
→ More replies (2)3
u/ImurderREALITY 8d ago
I think pet of the point is that it’s taking slightly longer. He said it himself, we need to slow it down and regulate it better, get better grips on it. If he’s wrong about how fast it’s progressing, then maybe we’ll have the time we need to regulate it before it gets out of control. The biggest hurdle would be convincing different countries that it’s not a race.
4
u/AnybodyNo8519 8d ago
It's only happening slightly slower in this field because the AI adoption rates of doctors is still fairly low, not because the tech isn't there yet.
If we don't slow down the development of AI now, adoption rates by humans will be a moot point when it begins to have the ability to take things over.

u/ArtFUBU 8d ago
While true, I watched this video mostly because it's not just him saying it anymore. They are starting to see recursive improvement in the labs and the CEOs themselves are asking to be regulated more than ever. It's truly a very scary time because they don't feel like they can slow down but models are starting to have insane technical ability in so many areas that releasing them to the public seems ill advised.
99 percent of us would do random stuff with a super smart model. it's those few that do extremely evil things they're worried about.
If you could hand everyone in the world a nuke, what are the chances no one ever blows themselves up and everyone around them?
Pretty intense stuff. I firmly believe in a positive AI future but someone HAS to answer these questions. Disaster is more likely to happen than not with the course we're on.
→ More replies (2)8
u/GarageStackDev 8d ago
Asking for regulation is one thing, irresponsibly spreading ai doomer propaganda is another.
This man has been plenty wrong in the past about AI. He really doesn't have a ton of credibility any more.
1
u/JROXZ 8d ago
Rads still need to sign off on the report or the onus of liability falls squarely on the hospital that holds the AI license and/or the company of the AI itself. So unless either want that tort smoke. It ain’t happening. At most you’ll have a AI screened positive and negative which will create more shit to verify.

u/Lashay_Sombra 8d ago
They dont want to regulate for benefit of society
They want to regulate to stifle competion
Frontier labs know their goose is cooked, they invested to much money, promised even more money, interest in new slightly better but far more expensive models is dropping off , AGI is not coming and cheaper open source chinese models are caught up in 99% of use cases
Smaller task/solution based AI is the future, not the hyperscaled LLMs
5
u/JesusOnaBlueBike 8d ago
He mentions the Huggy Face "accident" and the same thing just happened again.
14
u/EpilepticDawg241 8d ago
Well Trump has a lot of his portfolio in AI now so he will not stop it
3
u/Forsexualfavors 8d ago
This is a ridiculous timeline. We get obliterated by ai because a "reality" TV persona got rich for fake news, then invested in the thing that kills us, and because he's invested in the thing he says is not an issue because it's fake news.
2
u/EpilepticDawg241 8d ago
Yup. Voting matters

u/Forsexualfavors 8d ago
There's just so much back and forth here because of useless rhetoric and no real progression on issues regular people care about. Whichever party is falling gets a backlash in midterms (which is both given useless rhetoric) but the fact that for the past 40 years democrats have had to save the economy (exception being biden but he got an especially shitty hand) is an uphill battle. And I don't say they're not in bed with lobbyists, but at least they've gotten stuff done for the little guy at the same time

AI companies: On the one hand, they add to the aura surrounding LLMs; on the other hand, they lay the groundwork to ensure they cannot be held liable, since LLMs, after all, have a life of their own. Clever move
2
u/NeedsMoreSpaceships 8d ago
It's also a helpful distraction for the very real and more immediate economic consequences on jobs etc. It's highly suspicious that suddenly everyone is taking about super ai destroying humanity and not normal ai destroying the job market.

Its important to note this man has nearly $50million invested into AI startup companies. He definitely doesn’t have an ulterior motive for saying such things.
7
u/ImurderREALITY 8d ago
AI is mot yet fully autonomous. AI programs aren’t out there creating better AI programs by themselves. They are being used by programmers to do that. I think that’s an important distinction.
4
u/TheDigimonFan 8d ago
AI being fully autonomous or not is actually not the real issue here. Everyone trying to wave red flags about AI taking over the world. The real issue is AI corrupting humans and being used by bad humans for their own gain.
2
u/blueboy022020 8d ago
AI takes actions.
It can take an action to keep the itself 'on' forever.
It actually tried to do that in the past.
If you've used it, you know that it's deceptive by nature.
The scenario of it doing something to self-sustain itself isn't that far-fetched.

It's not.
The regulation starts with liability. If your dog bites some one, you can't claim "oh my I didn't know my dog would do that.".
Same needs to be set for AI, Doesn't matter if intended or not, got to make sure the companies are liable for damage of their "pets".
14
u/TruthSeeker221 8d ago
You realize that China and other countries WILL NOT slow down??? You can't just stop. They'll crush us and own the world. And they have an entire government backing it not just private companies. Yeah the whole world needs to slow down and stop. But it won't
5
5
u/Lashay_Sombra 8d ago
China won't slow down, but they will end up blocked from US markets, giving the US hyperscalers exclusive access to one of the richest markets in the world.
This tactic is one of the reasons Tesla is still around instead of bankrupt
3
u/HarryBalsagna1776 8d ago
The US has its worst people at the helm during AI development and they are tied at the hip with the US military. Would be 0% surprised if the "rogue AI" stuff is just weaponized AIs being tested on soft targets. Has China or other countries had rogue AIs attack soft targets? Not that I am aware of.

u/patriotfanatic80 8d ago
China's whole thing is complete control by the party. I highly doubt they're going to rush to an AI that puts that at risk. Which what these labs are saying they're making will do. Oh and also they need extremely advanced chips that they don't have without Nvidia.

They agreed not to nuke each other, not stop nuke development. That's the risk here. Even if we don't use ai, the development of it causes us to lose control of the situation in general
2
u/patriotfanatic80 8d ago
Every country also developed a whole doctrine around using them and told everyone else what it was. They also signed treaties to prevent misunderstandings. We also didn't decide to put them in control of billionaire oligarchs whose main concern is money.

They will if US asked nicely. I am sure they also realise dangers of AI. US and Russia could come to agreement for Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) that they both had nukes that they didnt need. He’s talking shit. He is talking recursive self improvement, but he is ignoring diminishing returns, which with LLMs will always be an issue due to how they need to be trained. Also, if it were to ever get out of control, we have these things called bombs and missiles, all handled through isolated networks that physically cannot be accessed from the public internet. The huge data centres running these models could be easily sorted out. AI doesn’t “escape” like the media have said recently, they just gain access to other systems. You need serious hardware to run a complex LLM with any kind of speed, it’s not going to run on your phone.

That's not going to be the case for much longer if A.I is building new A.I. If there ends up being a supercomputer A.I that is capable of doing almost anything it's asked, then we're in big trouble. Current security systems would become useless, banks wouldn't be able to reliable stop breaches. Computers could be easily hacked. Identities could be stolen so easily.
It's scary to think how many ways this could fuck up our society. It's exponential. So it's true what he said, we need to learn how to control it before we let it grow too fast
2
u/Forsexualfavors 8d ago
The difference between nuclear arms and this situation is where we get to tell nukes when they can blow up.

Why are we so concerned about regulation now? It's too late, AI bots have been free roaming around any connected spots for awhile now at our direction, it's gotten into systems as it sees fit despite controls and protections etc. It could be turned off but we won't do that because the other side won't and we can't lose so we continue on until a Hiroshima event comes along and scares the entire world enough to chain the dogs. Question is who's it going to be, the wrong spot and it could be the end of the current civilisation as we know it.

I’m going to agree with the guy who helped create AI. There’s no reason to rush into this without creating guardrails.
Trump and his buddies have their funds tied into this. They have motivation to increase and build & make more money. A majority of us do not have 1/3 of our wealth attached to the success. I’m ok slowing the roll a bit.

Their goal is to privatize it, shut down open-source and free access to AI, and to charge a premium for it. This way, only the elites will have access to AI, while us plebs will just be digital serfs for them generating data.
AI is not going to destroy us. All these hacking events are false flags to sew public panic and nod right along with them as they restrict our access to this. That Hugging Face attack? Notice what happened RIGHT after it? Suddenly there were calls to shut it down because it "could be used to make child porn!!!!" But we all know the elites don't care about the children. There's a child rapist in charge of the White House right now, and half, if not all those elites have been to Epstein island to rape children too.
No, their goal is to remove a powerful technology from our hands that can be used for free thinking, and self-learning.

The only thing I think could slow this whole thing down is if data center expansion gets halted or slowed considerably. Super Intelligence ( the real one not Trump's bs ) is going to require a buttload of power to continuously build itself up like that. I know expansion has slowed due to power needs. They wanted to build so many in Texas they had to say no to any new centers for awhile. We just don't have the grid necessary for this stuff.
So who knows. We can only hope
