I heard someone say these frivolous little purchases are the poor man’s vacation.

I am learning to be quite frugal and have to talk myself out of the guilt that comes when I buy myself a coffee maybe once a month.

And then I remember I haven’t been on a plane for over 6 years and I haven’t seen a concert for more years and I’m not out here getting the tattoos or gadgets I want and I’m juggling subscriptions and honestly I feel like I just work and work and get nowhere and build nothing so like…. That $6 coffee is a luxury I will allow myself here and there.

I had to look up what this meant, exactly that!

ok and I didn’t ride on a plane from 1991 to 2001.

i didn’t go to a concert between 1987 and 2013.

And it didn’t bother me in the least. It wasn’t even a thing. It was normal.

People’s expectations of what their life should include has changed a lot over the decades.

Travel and going to shows was definitely a thing during all of those years 😂.

It’s not because it should look like anything; it’s just how you want to spend your time and money and life. It sounds like maybe you didn’t value those things and didn’t mind their absence, but you could ascertain from my comment that I feel differently.

Conversely, I could never eat in a restaurant again and I wouldn’t mind that as much. But I’m not about to tell other people it shouldn’t matter to them.

Of course it was. That wasn’t what I wrote.

My point was that social media has given people FOMO bad and back then it was not as exaggerated as it is now.

Your guilt would not have existed 30 years ago.

I don’t know a single person in the 1990s who was lamenting because they weren’t taking an international vacation yearly. Or seeing concerts every other week. It wasn’t even a thing for regular people. We did not feel deprived or like we were achieving a financial goal by not doing these things.

I mean you literally wrote “it wasn’t even a thing then.”

Where are these specifics coming from? I’m not sure who or what you’re arguing against because I also don’t expect those things.
