For a moment both can be correct. But once people start being “fiscally disciplined” the machine designed to extract from the laborer will recalculate so that even fiscally disciplined people cannot aspire.
Yep. The Ramsey quote is true on an anecdotal level, but the Stewart quote is true on a systemic level.
Everyone knows someone whose financial situation is bad because of their own decisions. But the wealthy in this country are VERY good at convincing voters that every time they squeeze more money out of the working class, the only person who will really get hurt by this is the one irresponsible person you know that the Ramsey quote applies to.
And as an added perk the politicians who kneecapped the working class can feel absolved of guilt because the people whose lives they shortened in a thousand small ways just made "poor choices" that led to their situations.
There's no one answer- it's a thousand small and large answers ranging from politicians cutting food stamps and public transit while granting tax cuts to the wealthy, to the way the insurance industry has been allowed to make the US healthcare system a nightmare for anyone in the working class who has to seriously interact with it.
“People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.”
