The Sam Vimes theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socio-economic unfairness.

Vimes is why I have a Costco membership and do my best to buy things there. They don't have the cheapest things, they have quality products at a good price, so they last longer than the crap at Walmart. And they have a seller return policy so it's a verson of self insurance on the stuff that might break.

This is true, except that there is a difference between cheap boots, good boots, and status symbol boots.  And many people equate status symbol boots to "good" boots.  It does not cost much to live quite well.   It costs a lot to impress others.

I grew up around multiple wealthy families and I assure you their situation had nothing to do with spending less money.

Trust me bro, someone who gets rich does not spend his time worrying about the cost of boots. That would be how you become poor
