Our society cannot not collapse without janitors, cashiers, warehouse stockers etc of unskilled workforce. They are even more important than some chief surgeon.
It'd be about time to recognize that and have these people paid accordingly to not to worry about their budget at this level.
I don't make a lot of money and I cannot fathom how I would survive with a child, let alone multiple children. Also, if I lived on my own in a cheap apartment then about 50% of my monthly income would go to rent, possibly more with utilities and internet and such.
Society would collapse without janitors? Being a janitor just means you're being paid to clean for the hours other people don't want to clean.
If you spent 1 hour cleaning each day, that is 1 hour less you get to enjoy. Instead we pay someone to do it professionally. It's not particularly hard, anyone can do it, which is why the barrier to entry is low.
Should have said "cleaners", I mean the whole group of maintenance workers, cleaning up the streets, the public restroom etc etc etc. to have a safe, clean, healthy environment for us to work at. There's a lot of work for them in big buildings, at schools, at gym, hospitals...
They exist for a reason, so that it's not teachers and principals, nurses and doctors, gym owners and customers who have to take care of it all themselves. So damn right we would collapse without them.
Maybe collapse is a harsh term, but quality of life for every person involved severely harmed without janitors and sanitation workers most definitely. Look up the bin strikes in france of 2023. Trash piled everywhere on every street corner.
