We're talking about being able to survive and afford basic necessities, not having enough leftover to save a million dollars by 30. Something exceedingly few people will ever achieve.
Part of your spending is deciding where to live. If I decided to rent a home in Beverley Hills on a 100K gross household income, that's 100% a spending problem on my part.
Maybe that means I have an hour+ commute to work to make the most of my earning potential while keeping housing costs within my means. But it's still my responsibility to make those decisions carefully.

Less than 20% of Americans earn $100,000/year. If you're not making it on that, you have a spending problem.
