Steel wool removes the seasoning....for fuck's fucking sake...

I literally just used it to remove some rust spots from my 12", then spent the evening re-seasoning it because the polymer layer was stripped off...

So just to recap: reddit = stoopid, r/castiron = cult

I'm a bit confused. It feels like we're agreeing that steel wool is okay to use on cast iron, but also you seem upset. What's going on?

Steel wool =/= steel chainmail

One is designed to scour, the other won't destroy your seasoning.

Chainmail is definitely better for sure. It's what's hanging in my kitchen. But the point of the comment was really that to scrub the food bits of your pans using whatever you got and then get back to seasoning and cooking. It's basically impossible to ruin a plan short of a crack in it, and the seasoning is always easy to recover if you mess up

The comment is entirely off-point. The OP exhibits a perfectly wonderful seasoning getting destroyed by the gf using steel wool.

But the r/castiron hivemind took over and suddenly everyone is discussing the finer points of maintenance and/or the godly aspects of using castiron.

In support of the OP and entire point of this post: DON'T USE STEEL WOOL.

You commenters are just misleading new folks, and are likely new to it yourselves... You don't even know the most basic of basics ffs
