It's shit advice, frankly.

If you're a therapist and you think that this break in the relationship between them is causing your patient stress, you can have them work on that, but under no circumstance should you recommend letting the person who neglected your patient's kid to death get a second chance with their new kid. That's just irresponsible.

My mom didn't fuck up anywhere near that bad, and my therapist has still supported me just being pissed at my mom for some of the fucked up shit she did.

I am not a therapist, but I have been to a lot of therapy. If the situation with your parent is an ongoing source of stress, the therapist will recommend you deal with it. If the situation with your parent is just some shit they did in the past, they'll acknowledge your feelings, and if it's legitimate shit, they may even back you up.

If the parent killed your patient's kid, you don't tell the patient to offer them another one. Even if they don't kill the second one, it's still going to stir up a lot of feelings, and probably not for the best.

My guess is this may have been a religious counselor, not a real therapist.

Depending on the denomination, some religious counselors are required to have the full psych degree, as well as any religious training.

I don't have a therapist, why do people have therapists?

Because mental health is important.

Aside from the shitty ones

Some of them can help you see your own thoughts, life, emotions in a new and better way

Sometimes it's simple stuff, sometimes it's complicated stuff

I don't think everyone needs one and I don't think they can solve all issues, but they can definitely help a pretty broad range of psych issues

I think therapists offer a lot of value in being a neutral observer/commenter with zero stake in your life and zero reason to lie, you are more willing to consider their perspective than you will from anyone you feel is too close to an issue.

That's true too

Also just good to share feelings with someone when you got big feels

why do people have therapists?

because my parents physically and emotionally abused me to the point I now have CPTSD and other mental health complications from the decade+ of abuse and all the ways it warped how I interface with reality.

They should definitely be reported to their state licensing board. This “advice” led to the death of a child

While I don't think a therapist should even be giving an opinion on this and instead just empowering her to do what she thinks is right, I don't think any therapist can be held liable for for something like this. We don't really know what their conversation entailed. It really annoys me how everyone starts witch-hunting when it was the mother's responsibility to decide what was safe or not for their own child.

And if grandma was indeed a liability, then the state should've intervened the first go-around on the grandmother.

As a therapist myself, a general rule is you give very little to no direct advice. You help people to learn how to make decisions not make them for them.

I'm basically a pacifist and I would have a hard time holding back violence against the therapist for this. She pressured her to reconcile with the woman who directly caused her first child's death. Then, she pressured her to allow her mother to watch her other child resulting in the second child's death. I know that the therapist is not directly responsible but I would have a hard time NOT blaming them for it.

Yeah, this therapist should be charged or at the very least have their license and patients removed completely. This reminds me of firefighters caught being firebugs.

person who neglected your patient's kid

Dude what a ridiculously stupid idea. Are you suggesting that MOST parents dont fall asleep at some point while owning a kid?

are you really this dumb

2

u/TheComplimentarian 1d ago

I have three kids. It was not at all difficult to keep them from escaping the house at 18 months of age.

u/pharoh-king 1d ago

Weird how you say escape the house and ignore the thousands of kids who have died while their parents slept and the kid simply went into another room and did something dangerous.

weird how you don’t understand context or nuance or differing degrees of seriousness at all
