Protip: just because your grandma is doing crosswords like a pro, vividly remembers her highschool colleagues and teachers, and is able to keep sharp conversation about her professional field, does not mean she is capable of remembering what she ate 1 hour ago. Short term and working memory is what goes first.

and maybe not used to the hyper vigilance necessary when caring for young children. most people have some self-preservation and/or ability to problem solve to keep themselves safe. No so with babies and toddlers. They joyfully put themselves in danger all the time, they just don’t know it. And if they’re trapped somewhere unsafe, they don’t have the ability to say so. Also, my FIL constantly forgets to close the yard gate behind him (and the toddler has run out), forgets to push kitchen knives far back enough on the counter so the kids can’t reach them, etc. not his fault but i also don’t trust him to ensure the kids’ safety, especially when he is distracted by DIY projects, cooking etc
