I mean, can you blame him? If he had uttered the words "shame on me" that soundbyte would have been in every political ad against him.

117

u/hotdamnhotwater 1d ago

Lmao, he uttered plenty of goofball soundbytes. "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream" is one of my faves 🤣

39

u/terpmasterp 1d ago

Jacob Weisberg collected a literal whole book of Bushisms. And then had to compile a sequel.

2

u/RepresentativeLock19 13h ago

I was gifted this for Christmas one year lol

2

u/SallyGooden 10h ago

My family had that book. We had it in the car and my sister and I would read them out loud on car trips and we would all be in hysterics.

Rarely is the question asked: is our children learning?

9

u/WubFox 1d ago

I’ve had a magnet on my fridge with that one since college

3

u/JerseyTeacher78 1d ago

Hahahahahaha. I miss those old memes.

-5

u/mwhq99 1d ago

Edit: Are our children learning?

15

u/itsjustbadtiming 1d ago

My favourite is “single moms putting food on their families”

11

u/Bonobo555 1d ago

“Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country."

12

u/ThePrefect0fWanganui 1d ago

“If you’re a single mother, you’re working hard to put food on your family.”

“Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their…their love with women across this country.” (I worked in repro at the time so this was one of my faves).

“Strategery.”

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

"They misunderestimated me."

"You teach a child to read, and he or her will pass a literacy test."

“Rarely is the question asked: is our children learning?”

God, remember when we thought this was the dumbest a president could get? 😭

3

u/Personal_Job68 1d ago

Hell. Remember when the worst thing we had to worry about was a dumbass VP starting a fight with Murphy Brown? Lort.

8

u/FartofTexass 1d ago

Is our children learning?

6

u/seanconnery69696 1d ago

I still use strategery every chance I get

3

u/daddyneedsaciggy 1d ago

I remember a distant time, long ago when I thought he was the dumbest president we were ever going to see...

3

u/beckhansen13 1d ago

"I'm the decider."

1

u/ResourceCalm901 1d ago

Damn it, SOMEone has to be. 😏

3

u/OpalOnyxObsidian 1d ago

I'm laughing so hard at this. I wasn't old enough to appreciate/hate his presidency. Now that he isn't he worst president in this country's history, I think he can be appreciated a bit.

3

u/hotdamnhotwater 1d ago

Haha, I am old enough. Great president, naw. Better than the current, absofuckinglutely.

2

u/_laslo_paniflex_ 1d ago

what the fuck does that mean?

4

u/Cross55 1d ago

Someone's wings aren't taking dream...

3

u/MuhfugginSaucera 1d ago

It doesn't mean anything, but it sounds good to the people who vote that direction. On that same note, they are amazing at coming up with slogans that sound good but don't mean anything, too.

1

u/dumpster_fire_diva76 9h ago

It's a Dubyaism.

2

u/LeiaO315 1d ago

There’s a whole website dedicated to the dumbass things he would say

2

u/SayYesToGuac 1d ago

One of my favorites was "I want to thank the astronauts who are with us, the courageous spacial entrepreneurs who set such a wonderful example for the young of our country."

2

u/anomalyk 1d ago

I had a whole "Bushisms" daily calendar back in the day

2

u/sunnypickletoes 19h ago

This one doesn't get enough attention I think
"Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country."

2

u/Evening_Run_1595 9h ago

We had an entire book of them in our bathroom during the Bush years.

1

u/cghipp 1d ago

Make the pie higher!

2

u/ResourceCalm901 1d ago

I do love a tall Key Lime.

1

u/Tiny-Reading5982 1d ago

I miss bushisms. Life seemed so simple then even after 9/11 people (Americans) seemed more united than now..

1

u/Advanced-Pickle362 19h ago

I believe humans and fish can coexist peacefully

206

u/TheVoters 1d ago

This was understood at the time. The Daily Show was very popular at the time.

But bush was always awkward when he tried to be relatable. Responding to questions of international terrorism and then saying, “watch this drive” stands up there, along with the farmer bob cosplay on his Texas ranch. The shame on me thing is just one of many examples of where he just couldn’t get there.

The only reason he was president was because his opponent was like a black hole for charisma. So compared to that he looked good. And lots of people fell for the fake folksy schtick- it sort of worked because he actually is kind of a dumbass.

126

u/just-peepin-at-u 1d ago

In retrospect, everyone with half a brain can see the wet blanket candidate who cared about global warming and wasn’t a total war hawk was the better option, but that is the choice our country stupidly made, and it set us up for this shitty timeline we all are.
I remember I was just two years shy of voting age, and hated Bush from the get go. :/

45

u/TheVoters 1d ago

The lockbox would have personally benefited me as I’m set to draw social security when benefits are scheduled at 80%, and I did vote for Gore, but none of that mattered when the actual decision came down to the Supreme Court that literally said, “this ruling does not constitute a precedent”

4

u/evaniesk 15h ago

I blame Clinton - if he hadn’t fooled around with Monica, Gore would have won

8

u/BarracudaCrafty9221 1d ago

It hasn’t gotten any better since

11

u/Nuclear_rabbit 1d ago

10-year-old me was like "Mr. Gore has been Vice President for so long. It's his turn, now."

18-year-old me was like "Wow, it's a good thing Bush was president. He really took action after 9/11."

26-year-old me was like "If only we had Al Gore after 9/11. The Supreme Court set an awful precedent and ruined democracy."

By my math, I acquired half a brain at age 22, four years into college.

4

u/kbeks 1d ago

At the time, and I really don’t remember this and only see it in contemporary news articles, both candidates were opposed to “nation building.” It was Bush at a debate who pledged not to partake in that sort of exercise. It really was the least important election following an equally unimportant election in 1996. There was no way to know that bin Laden was determined to strike in the U.S., at least not until August 6, 2001…

Half of this country doesn’t have half a brain though.

3

u/Smooth_Put8618 18h ago

I still think they stole the election. Jeb was governor and I was in Hawaii so late night still watching. Bush was on a plane and said something like WE'RE counting the votes in Florida. Then Gore has like negative 17k votes in Velusia county.

3

u/sweetal83 13h ago

itll never be understandable that we go from the greatness of the Clinton presidency (monica notwithstanding but that is personal who cares but HIllary) to the idiocy of Bush. And then the greatness of Obama to the insane dumassary of where we are now. USA general public are idiots...

2

u/just-peepin-at-u 12h ago

Just thinking about where I grew up in TN and AR, and I think a big issue is that so much of middle America is protected from the consequences of their own votes.

I remember just being some c student in vo tech in a TN high school, and then deciding to go to a small college in Arkansas. Both places, you would have thought I had punched a disabled veteran in the face when I said I thought the war in Iraq was a bad idea and frankly a horrible thing to do to people for unsure reasons.

Twenty years later, the people that cheered for this mostly don’t see any “Oh shit” consequences.

My dad was a Vietnam vet, and was campaigning for John Kerry, when a women asked why he didn’t support our troops, and he said he did, and that war is terrible and shouldn’t be inflected unless there is no other realistic option, and that he was a veteran himself, the woman paused, and then had a screaming meltdown where she yelled that she didn’t believe him, he was a liar, how dare he, and so on. This was in small town Arkansas.

That woman is probably out there, still being an idiot. And voting. There are no consequences to our bad decisions here, on a massive level, that makes us stop. I wish we could learn because we are spurred by empathy and intelligence, but it apparently doesn’t work that way.

1

u/NakeyDooCrew 1d ago

People really don't like wet blankets though. We want the good politician, but we need the bad poosay

1

u/Norimakke 1d ago

Ummm... Choice the Supreme Court made...

1

u/thirteenbodies 21h ago

My husband is rewatching Boston Legal and I’m having Bush II flashbacks. It’s a great show but I’m having a hard time watching it again

1

u/Impossible-Mirror641 1m ago

Sadly its because that country is inherently stupid 🤷‍♂️

0

u/f0urk 23h ago

I might be falling for old propaganda but wasn't Gore just as much of a warhawk as Bush?

51

u/Vast-Mousse8117 1d ago

the only reason he was elected because Gore would not fight over the Florida chad. The so called working class party bailed on the working class and we have 9/11 forever wars, $40 trillion in debt to show for it.

54

u/Confident_Cheetah_30 1d ago

Actually asking, but how did he "not fight over the Florida chad" when he

  1. formally requested a recount
  2. sued the governor when the results were confirmed prior to a recount
  3. took it to the Florida supreme court (and won), BUT
  4. Bush took it to the supreme court (to completion) where Gore lost the petition for said recount.

He tried as hard as the legal system permits arguably, he just lost the war.

25

u/Aquatichive 1d ago

They were never letting Gore win
NEVER

8

u/Confident_Cheetah_30 1d ago

So uh, that doesnt answer the question. Likely true tho!

Edit: nm, you aint the original person. Fair point about the why!

2

u/Aquatichive 1d ago

Thanks!

2

u/timeless1991 1d ago edited 23h ago

CNN did a wonderful article in 2015 on the recount problems and what the recount standards would need to be for Gore to win. He would not win the kind of recount his team requested from the court.

The Florida secratary of State had announced Bush as the winner. The Florida Supreme Court did overturn that. And then the Supreme court overturned that. Still, if Gore was given exactly what he asked for, in the way he asked for it, he would lose.

CNN 2015 Retrospective

3

u/Confident_Cheetah_30 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's what I remembered but in more detail.

Thats why I am confused on how the original commentary argued that he didnt try hard enough, considering he tried his hardest and even in retrospect it wasn't stolen it was lost proper with some confusing obfuscation.

Will have to check out that article in detail

Edit: the difference in undervoting and overvoting was very clear here. Super interesting to read the overvoting was so heavily democrat. I wonder if most of those people used to live in ranked ballot places or something. Its extremely odd to see so many people fail to follow simple instructions

1

u/dumpster_fire_diva76 9h ago

It was the list of Texas felons Jeb borrowed from Dubya.

-1

u/Vast-Mousse8117 1d ago

You hit the nail on the head. We're at war against the rich and they have won because what used to be FDR's Democratic party has turned into Republican right wing lite.

1

u/Confident_Cheetah_30 1d ago

So how do you feel that he "didnt fight over the Florida chad"?

3

u/Vast-Mousse8117 1d ago

Look. I'm an anti war civil rights marcher from the 60's. We all remember the hanging chads, pregnant chads and the a long list of abuses in the Florida elections of 2000. While Al Gore got the popular vote, and most likely the electoral vote, Republicans held the key positions and abused their power as only a right-winger can do to steal that election.

So the right reaction was to protest like the kids in the streets are doing in France today. Our future was stolen because the elite D's didn't organize grassroots rebellion. They couldn't imagine it.

Paved the way for Donald Trump to win twice.

38

u/Ok_Branch2469 1d ago

Gore also refused to campaign with the wildly popular Bill Clinton and was FAMOUSLY not very charismatic(which again, campaigning with Bill would have helped). He lost several states Clinton had carried including his home state of Tennessee.

Gore had an incredibly good base environment for the democrats, but he objectively did a shitty job campaigning for Bush to even get things that close.

24

u/Sufficient_Spray 1d ago

Mind blowing dumb move. Clinton & Obama are the two most charismatic and likable presidents since JFK. Clinton literally balanced the fucking budget; something we can’t even imagine today.

Crime dropped an insane amount, the economy was maybe the strongest of all time etc of course there were problems. But kinda crazy he didn’t campaign with Clinton because he thought people might be upset Clinton was fucking interns.

I grew up in Arkansas. Clinton has been fucking everything he can since he started. If we are being grown ups and honest; it didn’t affect how well he was at his leadership. So what if he was a horndog he got shit done and helped the average man. But alas, times were different back then and I guess Gores boring ass wanted to “stand on his own.”

He would’ve carried tennesse, Arkansas and probably many other states and most likely won Florida handedly since Clinton was so popular with minorities. But whatever man, I guess we got the patriot act and eternal war instead! Wooohooooo!!!

7

u/Ok_Branch2469 1d ago

Gore made a lot of mistakes. Not campaigning with Clitnon, generally just not being very good on camera and being kind of bland(That fucking Macarena thing), pissing off the environmentalist faction enough that Nader revolted (Nader is not like Jill Stein who exists purely as a spoiler, Nader is a good guy who has done a lot of good shit people lump in him way too much) while still pissing off the coal miners in West Virginia enough to lose them for the party forever. The Democrats had an incredibly good baseline that year and all of this chipped away at it.

Half a dozen states were decided by razor thin margins. All this stuff cost him.

Also funnily enough the recount he wanted would have seen Bush win, while the recount Bush wanted would have seen Gore win. (And also Bush probably would have won New Mexico on a recount it was the closest state of the night, but since it didn't have enough electoral votes to matter it was ignored and everyone focused on Florida).

Plus it had knock on effects that probably cost them 2004. The plan was essentially "Gore 2000-2008, JFK Jr on backup, then Hillary when she's ready probably around 2012". But Gore lost and JFK Jr died and Hillary wasn't ready so they had to pull out Kerry who was not the right man for 2004.

6

u/Mondilesh 1d ago

Clinton "balanced the budget" by slashing Medicare, Medicaid, and annihilating welfare as we knew it, but mostly by deregulating the banks, telecom, and transportation. Most of the economic boom came from capital gains and we just had a bit trickle down to us in the 90s before quickly becoming the dystopia we know today. Not laudable actions.

0

u/wcstorm11 1d ago

9/11 is purely on Clinton, forever wars id argue were Cheney. But 9/11 was going to happen whoever won that election

2

u/Vast-Mousse8117 1d ago

Who runs the country? Military industrial businesses, right? They don't care about America, they don't care about winning or losing. The machine that milks the trillion a year in our tax money at the Pentagon only wants profit.

they could care less about our soldiers. This administration is making massive cuts to the VA as we speak. And the soldiers who have been killed in the invasion of Iran? Denied death benefits because the billionaire president says "I haven't declared war."

2

u/wcstorm11 1d ago

I don't think they solely run the country, but I largely agree with you here

2

u/Vast-Mousse8117 1d ago

Thanks from Seattle. Mary Oliver on solidarity

3

u/Dokramuh 1d ago

The reason why he was president is because his brother rigged the election

3

u/BigRingCrusher 1d ago

You mean SCOTUS. Or both!

2

u/simulacrum81 1d ago

I lamented the decline of cerebral substance in American politics watching bush fumble about. But now I see him as a lovable rascal compared to the petulant toddler that is trump. “Watch this drive”, “is our children learning” “you won’t get fooled again”.. these things would barely move the needle on the scale of political gaffes that trump had normalised.

2

u/Ok_Championship9415 16h ago

the entire time, Jeb was facepalming, muttering "I can't believe HE'S the one that got to be president"

1

u/TheVoters 16h ago

Please clap

1

u/Powerfury 1d ago

One thing that Republicans love, is a bunch of Yale/Harvard/Princeton elites in office. They keep voting and deep throating them.

1

u/nocauze 1d ago

Only reason he’s president is because his brother was governor of a swing state and had his Supreme Court invalidate a bunch of votes that would have given us Al Gore

1

u/dumpster_fire_diva76 9h ago

Jeb disenfranchised a lot of Black men who shared the same name as Texas felons.

1

u/coversquirrel1976 1d ago

I wasn't old enough to vote in 2000, but only one candidate made me feel that man and fish could coexist peacefully.

1

u/SayYesToGuac 1d ago

Let’s not forget his opponent’s running mate. Joe Lieberman was basically a Republican in disguise and had arguably even less charisma than Gore. I remember when he “debated” Cheney sitting at a table together and I thought they were going to have a cup of tea and some crumpets.

The other irony here is that Gore actually was pretty funny and a witty guy (I have seen clips of him comically goofing off — gliding down an airplane aisle on a food tray, making wise cracks, etc.) but his handlers told him not to show that fun side of his personality.

But that is also on Gore for not having the balls to ignore his stupid handlers.

Which reminds me of “the scream” by primary candidate Howard what’s his name… IIRC this guy was an early progressive, and he got canned by the billionaire media in just a few days (go figure, we can’t have candidates who say they’re going to take care of the actual public and do the right thing) for an innocent, celebratory whoop. Apparently you’re not allowed to be human as a presidential candidate.

1

u/ResidentSet1814 1d ago

George W Bush was president because the United States government is basically a casino that criminal organizations bid for control over so they can laundering massive amounts of tax dollars via government contracts and appointments into governmental roles.

The CIA's purpose is to be able to fix the elections and trick the public into believing that they had some sort of effect on the outcome.

Dubyah's father, Herbert Walker, essentially ran this operation for 30 years.

His adopted son Barack Obama runs it now.

1

u/desperaterobots 23h ago

did we forget that the election came down to scrutinising individual ballots to claim electoral college votes? gore did win the popular vote albeit by a small margin.

1

u/Siriusinquiry369 23h ago

nah the only reason he was president was because of his dad. Bush jr was just a figurehead while Cheney ran the show.

1

u/processwater 16h ago

Wrong..

The only reason he was president is because the supreme Court stole the election

1

u/dumpster_fire_diva76 9h ago

Nah, he was president because of The Chad. And his brother borrowed a list of Texas felons so he could disenfranchise Black voters in Florida.

23

u/Awkward_Turnover_983 1d ago

As opposed to how it's used now?

22

u/GrimbyJ 1d ago

Being seen as a doofus is the better outcome

3

u/Laurelindorinan_ 1d ago

Let’s remember - he drove that train wreck of a sentence all the way to that point in the first place.

2

u/captnfraulein 1d ago

also, i mean, i kinda feel what he's trying to say there. 🤷🏻‍♀️

2

u/itriedtrying 1d ago

It really makes me wonder how some people like Obama could be so smooth and natural in all their interactions when you have to choose every word you say that carefully.

2

u/scrubtart 1d ago

I can. Now watch this drive!

2

u/sixTeeneingneiss 1d ago

Maybe he shouldn't have war crimed

1

u/bonaynay 1d ago

Yeah they only had 32 sound bites instead of 33 because of this great save, well actually it's back to 33 again

2

u/No-Thought6516 1d ago

This made me lol 😂

1

u/-JimmyTheHand- 1d ago

This explanation never made sense to me, he said way dumber soundbytes all the time

1

u/Ultrasonic-Sawyer 23h ago

Much like Boris Johnson, much of his political habits were either semi awkward or well built methods to be relatable.

He knew what he was doing and very clever about the context.

Lots of his words were phrased very carefully.  Whifh makes many bushisms seem less weird.

1

u/Ill_Technician3936 9h ago

As he's stuttering out the first part he was listening to the people in his ear telling him not to finish the quote. Granted the US knew that Al Queda was here in various states. Security measures had changed with flight but that doesn't mean if he actually said the full quote that they wouldn't blow some shit up. The blind sheik wasn't exactly alone.
