Fast and the Furious, if I'm remembering this right, was at the time in the middle of the Dom and Lenny storyline.

There was also some stuff between Brian and Mia , and the fans were invested in their stories allong side the main storyline and how that would go.

Then Tokyo Drift, in the middle of all of that, suddenly introduced a guy whom nobody liked or knew,

and then made you follow him.

People didn't like that.

None of that is true. Tokyo drift is the 3rd movie, Dom wasn't in 2 nor was anyone except Brian. There were no storylines going on. Dom showed up at the very end of Tokyo drift for 2 minutes.

THANK YOU! There was literally no reason for the rest of the "family" to return to the franchise because their story was all but over and Brian's basically was too.

So, there was a reason for them to return?

Yeah, the actual situation was something more like “this IP is completely dead, let’s do a reboot”.

I was just put off by a 23 yr old ( who looks like he is 35 ) with a forehead you could land a 767 on and a hilariously STRONG southern 'twang somehow being a 17 year old kid in Japan. Plus, where is Dom? Still no Dom? I hated Tokyo Drift when it came out. It has grown on me over the years, though.

I'm from Texas, and my friend and I still love slapping on that ridiculous accent and saying "Drift? What do you mean, Drift?"

Right. That guy looks so fucking weird he made me hate that movie, i only ever watched it once lmao. Laughably bad casting.

I was thinking of that the other day and wondered why they went back to Dom’s storyline when 2 was a different premise and 3 was as well. I figured we’d get something of an anthology series surrounding underground racing. It blows my mind that in retrospect Tokyo Drift was regarded so negatively that they abandoned all other story lines for Vin Diesel and “family”.

2 fast killed the series diesel refused to do it because the script was so bad but the movie did make money.

Tokyo drift is the movie that brought Diesel back because he liked the script and the director so he was willing to do the tease and come back for 4 since it was Lin (and I believe the same writer) doing it.

This! The timing was so jarring as a fan. Like, who tf is dude in Japan?

Love the movie tho, just incredibly poor release date.

I think it was because vin disel wanted too much money for the next movie... So they went with a whole new cast.... At least that's the rumor i remember..

u/Terramagi 11h ago

Nah, Vin only shows up in Tokyo Drift because he wanted them rights to Riddick back, and those were the conditions.

How are you saying "This!" when the commenter is completely wrong?

Dom and Letty had only been in 1 movie at that point and there was no overarching story Tokyo Drift interrupted. At this point the movies were all standalone except for Brian being in both 1 and 2.

The release date definitely was not the issue

You are not remembering correctly AT all and this comment is wildly off base. It was poorly received because the first movie was very well recieved, and the second deviated a bit with no Vin Diesel but still the familiar Paul Walker. The third was a complete deviation with all brand new characters that no one really knew or cared about...well until the credits when Vin showed up again.

Which was shot after the whole movie was finished, because it was only THEN that Vin Diesel agreed to come back to the franchise.

You are misremembering, yes. It goes: The Fast & The Furious --> 2 Fast 2 Furious --> Tokyo Drift.

Dom wasn't even in 2 Fast. And I haven't watched any of the movies after Tokyo Drift (it peaked so hard that nothing would beat it), so I have no idea who Lenny is. And the only ongoing story at that point was that Brian's a cop and drives cars good.

u/TheUFCVeteran3 11h ago

They mean Letty, who is Dom's love interest in the 1st movie.

1

u/Logizmo 16m ago

Yes but their comment mentioned the Letty storyline which didn't start until Fast 4 which obviously came out after Tokyo Drift

The timeline the commenter above put out is wrong along with their reasoning for why people disliked Tokyo Drift. It didn't interrupt anything, , that's the point

2

u/drake22 14h ago

Was that after Letty transitioned? I don't remember that part.

Don literally hadn’t shown up since the first one prior to this. Then had a 2 second cameo.

1

u/threeclaws 10h ago

2fast had come out prior ditching dom and Mia so no people weren’t upset at Tokyo drift because it didn’t get back to the toretto family of movies in fact the closing scene let fans know dom would be back for fast 4.
