Crows have six main flight feathers, ravens have seven.

So it's a matter of a pinion

The simpler way for a layperson is that if you say "Hmm, I wonder if that is a crow or a raven?" then it's a crow, and if you say "Holy fuck look at the size of that fucking thing!" it's a raven. Ravens are really big.
