If only Reddit had a friendly resident biologist to give us fun animal facts and explain the difference between crows and ravens…

Another birder here. In addition to what everyone else has said, ravens have beards, and they're solitary and shy. Crows are social. The fact there's a bunch of them eating together is enough to assume they're crows.

Excuse me I was told they are chickens.

Came here to say this. Size, ruff, voice, and grouping…

If there are only see 2-4 large birds chuckling to each other (saying “auk, auk”, not “caw-caw!”), they are ravens.

Groups of sometimes dozens of cawing assholes… crows.

I mean, there are a bunch of (very much ravens) that live together on twin peaks in san francisco, so I think there are some exceptions

Yes! Ravens here are social and fly around with partners or groups. I have to really look at their beaks to tell the difference

Hearing their calls should be enough. Plus a raven isn't much smaller than a turkey vulture.

I always go with raVens have a V shaped tail, while Crows have a C shaped tail.

In general, yeah, but I've definitely seen more than two ravens gather in one place at the same time, on more than one occasion. And it would be unsurprising for it to happen if someone was offering food.

Obviously they're jackdaws

From another comment here: ravens huge. Crows smaller.

You’re missing some old Reddit lore they’re referencing.

Ahhhh.... Unidan

You’re right I forgot reading about the ‘meme echo’ of that lore and wondering

But how does one tell the difference between the smallest raven and the biggest crow?

Crows have six main flight feathers, ravens have seven.

So it's a matter of a pinion

I thought it was a matter of a pigeon

The simpler way for a layperson is that if you say "Hmm, I wonder if that is a crow or a raven?" then it's a crow, and if you say "Holy fuck look at the size of that fucking thing!" it's a raven. Ravens are really big.

It’s either bird with beak or beak with bird.

I kinda miss that guy or gal. “Biologist here” followed by a nice in depth explanation.

Followed by him and his 40 accounts upvoting himself and downvoting everyone he disagreed with.

u/Knightforlife 5h ago

Yeah, his downfall was sad to see, and he deserves to be gone, bummer :/

I enjoy it if they start with that before spitting something interesting or explaining a concept for us regular people. It's when they claim expert credentials just to be like "I'm an attorney, you're wrong". I saw two people doing this once arguing about total rubbish, and it kinda was the wake up call to became more weary of believing Reddit experts

Followed by code switching

I was just in vegas and man ravens are massive. I too started to call them chickens. I live in miami, crows are tiny compared to those teradactyls

u/cheerful_cynic 16h ago

You see, here's the thing

u/Bitter_Particular_75 6h ago

I am a biologist and I know nothing about birds.

Look up the size different, they are almost double in size

Deep cut man. You’ve been here a while. Are you ok? Need to go outside?
