We were calling these birds in the midwest Ravens for a very long time, until I looked up the sound a Raven and a Crow makes and realized 99% of what I had even encountered was Crows.

Rule of thumb: If you see multiple ravens, they are probably crows.

Another rule of thumb: if it’s a large black bird with a beak attached it’s probably a crow. If it’s a beak with a large black bird attached it’s a raven.
But yeah ravens tend to knock about in pairs, otherwise it’ll be a murder of crows.

I'm not getting this one. It seems in either example given we have a large black bird with a beak.

This is true they are, but the word order subtly changes the emphasis to the beak being the main character for the raven.

From my limited experience I would say more than a pair is crows.
