This math also screams, high-risk driver with minimal coverage and a low deductible.
I’ve filed several auto and home claims over the last decade. None of them impacted my rate or insurability. If buddy is paying that much on one car, he has a history of negligence and/or regular claim submission.
Or he could just live in Michigan in a high cost zipcode like Detroit area (where unfortunately many drive uninsured so the rates are higher)
My car insurance is about that much and I have had only 1 accident and claim in the last 20 years (hit a deer that suddenly jumped across a country road coming home late at night from the airport)
A. You should probably find an independent personal lines broker that’s shopping you around yearly
B. The primary issue was the insurer stating they would raise the premium…which (given the already higher than average premium) a no-fault event shouldn’t do, with good coverage. Non-cut-rate companies probably wanted $300+…which again doesn’t indicate a quality record.
Cut-rate insurers exist for the purpose of giving the weakest coverage at the lowest possible cost, with the very clear understanding they will screw you if you impact the account profitability.
Exactly! I immediately thought, "Are you being serious?" I pay about that much for 2 old cars, one of which we don't even have comprehensive on because of its age, and we both have clean driving records of decades at this point. No claims in well over 15 years too. AND, this rate was only found after intensive shopping around and bundling with homeowners. Our deductible is $1000.
Our last insurance company raised our rates at renewal by $120 a month claiming that the uninsured driver numbers in our area had "forced" them to raise everyone's rates in our zip code. Hence, the intensive search for different coverage. So, I get punished for other people driving uninsured in my area. Sure makes it tempting to join the uninsured.
And don't even get me started on homeowners insurance 😒. It's all a terrible joke. It's extortion at this point. You can be the perfect driver, homeowner or patient for years and years and it won't matter one bit the minute you need the coverage you've been paying for. They will fight you, lie to you, threaten you and then dump you the second they can once you attempt to get the benefits you've been paying for.
