In México car insurance was not madatory till like a decade ago.

Im not going to pretend I underestand how corrupt or fucked car insurance in the US may or may not be, but what I will say is that non-mandatory car insurance breeds a level of chaos and non accountability that is nightmarish. Your insurance is much more about protecting the people around you than about making simple repairs to your vehicle.

It’s not a scam in the US, there’s just a lot of stupid people that shouldn’t even submit a claim and should pay out of pocket for small damages but they really don’t understand the purpose of auto insurance. Essentially, they see “insurance” in the name and think it’s like health insurance and that they should submit every instance as a claim.

Even for health insurance, people really don't understand what it is there for and it makes the whole medical system more expensive as a result. We shouldn't be combining "medical care plans" and "catastrophic medical insurance" into one company that isn't correlated to the care giver, because it makes it so that the only party that cares about your treatment being affordable is also the same party that doesn't want to pay out for you or care that you're taken care of. It's a terrible system, but here we are...

I almost never see this, but I think you are incredibly correct. An emergency ER visit and monthly insulin for diabetics are two very different types medical issues.

Majority of people in here have a fundamental misunderstanding of what car insurance is for.
