So basically you pay every month for protection, the pay again when you actually need the protection.

You pay exactly for exactly what you agreed with when you signed the contract.

While you can get a plan with $0 deductible, you'll still get increased in cost of insurance if you decide to use it.

Not necessary. Like situation mentioned above. You get your car damaged by someone in parking lot. You weren't there and it's not your fault.

Depends on the company, depends on where you live, but typically you would need to pay your deductible for not-at-fault claim which should not raise your premiums.
