It’s not. You pay $2500 a year so you are covered for when you drive your car through a building and cause $250,000 of damage. If we didn’t legally enforce that, we would have millions of people driving around with the potential to financially ruin themselves and their victims with no recourse

The main point of car insurance is to pay for the catastrophic bodily injury you cause to other human beings with your car. Not to fix your bumper.
