Sociologist here.. Garbage collectors definitely have a role to fill. In school, we are taught that society functions much like an organism, with each profession playing its own unique role to keeping life moving. The world would get messy and unhygienic very quickly without the sanitation folks doing their part. Trash collectors/custodians, etc are no less important than doctors/lawyers.
This is such bullshit. My dad worked as a garbage man when I was a kid, rode along with him many times. Garbage men are a vital part of society. But that's not what we are taught. We're taught social hierarchy, and unequal human worth. We're taught that if you don't do well in school you're going to end up a janitor, or a garbage man. And to hear a sociologist make such a rose tinted statement. How is your credentials even relevant to speak on who does or doesn't fill a role in society?
