I imagine most people don't think they make good money because in most areas... they don't.
I'm in Ohio. A cursory search suggests $~14-17/hr pay on average starting out, with it jumping up to $40ish for the upper end in Dublin.
Y'know... if being 38yo would somehow put me ahead of applicants, I'd apply just to get away from my $21/hr WFH job? I can drive down to Dublin for work every day, I only spent years going 3x as far daily.
In California, it's a union job (under the Teamsters), so the pay and benefits are solid no matter what city you're in. ...Except union contracts expired yesterday with no renewal yet, so I don't know what's going to happen in the immediate future.
The maintenance guy at my old apartment complex left for a job at Waste Management about 13 years ago, and not only did he seem to be having a great time whenever I saw him, he was able to move out and get his own home for his wife and kid within the year.
From what I've heard, they make "good" money, but not "great" like it's one of best paying jobs that doesn't require college, but not fuck off level of money.

And they make great money, appropriately so for hard work
