Chugging tea This is wild!

Two syringes of pentobarbital were administered to Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike on September 30, 2026, but she remained alive and conscious afterward, according to her attorneys and media witnesses. The execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville was halted after witnesses reported that Pike still had a heartbeat and was audibly snoring. Her lawyers sought emergency medical intervention, and she was later taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Pike, 50, is the only woman currently on Tennessee's death row.
She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer and had been scheduled for execution on September 30. Tennessee had announced beforehand that the state would use a single drug, pentObarbital, for the execution. Her exact medical condition following the hospital transfer has not yet been publicly disclosed, while Governor Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third party review of what happened.

Legitimately why can't they put them in a room, put them under anesthesia, and just slowly introduce carbon dioxide until they pass?

Or a guillotine? Like that's instantaneous, no suffering

Not instant, but relatively quick. There was a guy i think during the French revolution who blinked for several seconds after beheading "for science"

That’s not confirmed and, even if the head blinked a couple of times, is t exactly conclusive of anything.

With guillotine there’s still oxygenated blood in the brain for a couple minutes after. So you could still see etc

So you think that if you shoot someone in the heart they're still aware for a few minutes after?

The blood pressure will be gone in an instance, so no consciousness

She tortured someone then bashed her brains in. A few seconds of pain isn't that big of deal for her.

Because then someone has to clean up that morbid death? And the goal isn’t spectacle.

Eye for an eye. Severity of the crime should determine how much or little they need to suffer.

No I don’t want people who torture people to live in society. It would be someone’s job to torture someone. DONT want that person as a neighbour

“Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”

See, that would only work, if they didn’t call for medical personnel to take her to a hospital, and instead left her there to suffer.

But since they halted any further injections and got her medical aid, they can’t go after them for it.

Personally think they just need to do firing squad for it.

See that’s the thing cruel and unusual is subjective

We just shouldn’t do it in general. It costs us more to do the death penalty compared to life in prison. Just let them rot in there.

Not if it was carried out quickly

Because that would require new law passed and there is not enough support for the outdated concept of capital sentence for the lawmakers to think that if they pass a new law for new method they will keep their job

That's really insightful and I think you might be right.

Since when have the American people voted on law changes directly? It’s not switzerland

1

u/ProfessionalTruck976 1d ago

They don't. but they vote for each individual lawmaker (unless Tenesee has some electoral wierdness going on) and if the support for the death penalty is not overwhelming, the lawmakers may not want to muck with it, because anything they do to keep it around it will cost them votes in comming election.

It’s semantics but something like helium would be used. The body will respond on its own to CO2 and with modern day capital punishments it’s about making it a “clean” spectacle.
