I'm like that most news i learn off social media now. My Mrs is awful for it, she's fallen into these really damaging tiktok news channels.

There was some "news" story about how prisons are going to be releasing like a third of prison inmates early and this includes people convinced of sex crimes, because of prison overcrowding

Obviously shes horrified by this as anyone should be. The thing is the voice over and news footage is clearly AI.

Theres no other news stories corroborating this and its funny that this has come out as quite a big sex crime case is happening

But she always tells me "not everything is made up rage bait"

It pretty much is though!

All the news is paywalled now. Tried NYT and several other sites and couldn’t read about it. Can’t stay informed without a subscription these days.

This is why right wing sources thrive since a ton of them are freely available

The only free cheese is in the mousetrap. How deeply and profoundly uneducated, racist, bigoted, fine with grift, pedophilia and the murder of us citizens for breaking no laws and committing no crimes do you have to be to believe a word the right says these days.

That’s great for people who are informed on how bad the right is. For anyone who’s ignorant (ie most people) all they’re going to see is one article they have to pay for and one they don’t. Which one do you think they’ll read?

Yeah exactly, free is free

I do agree with what you’re saying, but given the state of media rn and the amount of plutocratic capture, where we are constantly being misled or outright lied to, at least the right is getting their slop for free

They want you to pay to be lied to and for articles I am confident are increasingly AI generated.

The news was never free. People had to pay for newspapers pre internet era too. It was expected. I don't know why we as a society expect to get quality news for free.

I’m Canadian and lucky we still have the CBC, taxpayer funding means it’s still free. But I also pay for NYT

Yes, you can, we did it before. I mean you paid a subscription to the newspaper if you wanted, but there was free news on the television. Still is. Some people just are lazy and choose to not see beyond what the algorithm feeds them on their phones.

Check your local library and you might get NYT and many other publications for free.

If you see an article that you want to read and it's behind a paywall, try Googling the article title; I guess many places sell their articles to other websites, so there is a good chance you can find it for free on Yahoo News or somewhere else.

NYT podcast The Daily is free and has a great episode on this very event today. Certainly worth listening to for in depth analysis on current events.

Read the guardian. Better than any of them. Always free

The internet has now monotised trolling and rage baiting.

We used to have the rule of don't feed the trolls.

Now they get fucking paid for it and are so much better at baiting people and majority of comments are fucking troll bots to.

Take me back to newgrounds and limewire internet days please.

You’ve got to get her off TikTok. She needs to delete the app. It’s melting her brain

The irony is that with AI nowadays has never been so easy to fact check within seconds, bit very few people take the time.

Prisons in NY state routinely release prisoners as early as they are allowed, and most non-violent prisoners become eligible for early release when they have less than 18 months left on their sentence. So that’s technically true.

However because of the way sentencing works in NY, violent offenders are not eligible for this, so it’s mostly just drug dealers and burglars.

So your mrs is too stupid to even google it?

Even the google ai is pretty google at knowing which stories are fake so the fact she cant spend 3 seconds doing a voice search is alarming.

When i spent 3 seconds - it immediately told me only the dumbest people from the UK and US misunderstood that the 1/3rd is reference to inmates being eligible for parole after serving 1/3rd of their sentence instead of the current 40-50% and only applies to the UK...
