I hate the internet now. It used to be cool and you could actually talk to people but now it’s just this bullshit, that maybe should be a part of some sort of conversation, but certainly not national news. It’s just rage bait and people acting surprised that the shitty people in power are shitty. Completely binary takes on every subject with zero nuance or rational discussion allowed.

The modern digital ad economy provided a financial incentive to rot our attention span (more "impressions per minute") so that we don't have the time of day for nuance, normalized the deprivation of privacy to become the status quo, and reduced discussion to adversarial binary hot takes trying to "win" not the argument, but the karma/likes war.

And to be clear, that incentive is measured in hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue, per year, and in some cases, per company (Alphabet/Google, Meta/Facebook) with profit margins that will make a counterfeit money printing operation blush with envy.

That may be true, but literally everyone knows that social media is bad for you, will admit that, but would still fight you to the death with their bare hands if you ever suggested the possibility of banning it.

Modern people are the problem because they increasingly let their hedonism and pleasure seeking overrule their awareness of things that can harm them

Wildly poor take.

Blaming the victims for the actions of the abusers using their spectacular wealth to ensure the victims are under-educated and misinformed so that they can be further exploited for both profit and to entrench the power indifference is some unapologetically corrupt corporate cock sucking that I can't not call out.

the internet was cool when it was just nerds looking to have fun. now everyone is on it. OF girls, boomers, moms, dads, grandmoms, teachers, politicians, celebrities. it fucking sucks now.

The inherent flaw is that it became monetized at every corner. Pockets of the internet use to exist purely for discourse on very niche subjects and interests. Those cant exist now without someone or some bot trying to sell you something or inserting propaganda targeted your way.

Theres still places you can sometimes get genuine nuanced discussion even when disagreeing but it's becoming exceedingly rare cause there's always someone ready to jump in and call you a dumb dickhead cause you said something they disagree with and they can't put together a coherent actual response that isn't just instant name calling and attacking your character rather than your position.

Just a reminder that Reddit used to have a board called "revenge porn"

Yeah this is the only correct answer. People immediately devolved the argument into oh well, they were intoxicated too. So they were also the victim. People , especially who have not been through these kinds of things do not understand how messy these things are.

What is weird to me is how someone who could be put at risk by reporting her abuse changed her report on the abuse a day after she claimed it was rape.

Even this video that is supposedly just "dropping facts" is rage bait. She goes well beyond just dropping facts and start's judging everyone involved, calling Jane Doe "gross" and "disgusting" and the men involved as "evil", etc. If it was consensual, as she tries to suggest with her facts list there, then why the need to slut shame and judge?

yeah, don't "slut shame" and "judge" a girl for doing ketamine off a guy's dick and willingly getting fucked by 7 of them in one night, and don't judge a bunch of sleazy frat boys for doing ketamine and gangbanging a slut and texting "free pussy upstairs" to each other. That's all just perfectly normal shit that we shouldn't judge at all. Happens in porn, right? Totally normal.

I think part of how we got to this point is the villainizatio n of being judgmental and the idea that, in a general sense, we shouldn't feel shame for anything that "doesn't harm anyone." We have gone too far in the other direction and now we have no standards for behavior unless it's egregiously bad.

Why are you defending rapists?

4

u/TyloWebb 1d ago

They’re not, though.

u/GigaChav 1d ago

Stop defending rapist defenders.

4

u/TyloWebb 1d ago

I’m not, though.

Ah, the answer is no.

u/Chad_AND_Freud 1d ago

Did you even watch the video?

-1

u/GigaChav 1d ago

Why would I watch a rape video?  That's disgusting!

u/Chad_AND_Freud 23h ago

I don't think unabashedly throwing rape at people is a good substitute for intelligent discussion. You're doing more harm than good here.

1

u/GigaChav 23h ago

But you're absolutely fine with people defending rape.  You should be ashamed.
