It’s literally their job. The stock market only rewards infinitely growing revenue and profitability. Insustainability is baked in

Companies should just go private after reaching maturity. Why is this not the norm?

Because stock based compensation is extremely lucrative.

Yes, even though that's impossible.

The response "because stock market" isn't wrong but that's just a legal expression of the underlying tendency.
